Doesn't look like a 10k Z to me. The "GT" Emblem is from a skyline GTR. It looks like a decent car (minus the rear wing and rims) but 10k is way to much, I'd believe the owner if he told me he has 10k into it but that's not what he'll get for it. Offer him like 3-4 grand and see if/what he counters. Also they have electric fuel injection not mechanical.

Also the owner doesn't sound supper educated about Zs if he thinks that GTR emblem is original to the car.

Look, just tell the seller to get online and search for Skyline GTR badges on google or even better on ebay if he wants proof and still refuses to believe you. If he really wants to sale you the car he'll come down in price once he sees they are Skyline GTR badges. But if you cought him in a lie then he'll refuse to search the badges and say he'll call you back and never will. Tell him to come here to the site and talk to the guys who actually know the history of these cars and see what he says to that. The engine is a L series and NOT the S20, far as I know the only Fairlady with a L engine was the "Fairlady 240ZG" that had the L24 inline six. A completly different type of Z car. Theres only seven versions of the Z. Those are the Datsun 240Z 260Z and 280Z, Nissan Fairlady Z, Nissan Fairlady 240ZG, Nissan Fairlady 432 and 432R which was the supp'd up version of the already crazy 432. Ever find out what the VIN number was? Is he the original owner?

By the way the 432 and 432R were the racing versions of this car. They were factory prepared race versions sold to racing teams and privatears. Do a search here and on IZCC.com for more great info :) . The 240ZG was the aerodynamic version with a sleek more cone like nose design much like the Dodge Daytona Charger or the Plymouth Superbird. A member here, Alan, owns a 240ZG aka ZG. And another member named Kats owns a 432. The 432's are super rare and sale for CRAZY money, often considered by many to be the epitome of classic Japanese sports cars sort of like the 1970 Chevelle SS454 LS6 is to muscle cars over here in the states. The car looks good but people set on wrong information were either misinformed by thier previous owner, or they're lying which means no matter how clean the car looks they could be lying about something else. Buyer Be Ware.

thanks for all the info guys, I did tell him that I went on the internet and googled the heck out of fariladyz gtr and found nothing. He's still swearing up and down its a racing version....

As I mentioned the car looks very clean, I'll have to look at the flares and rear panels more closley for body work...the wheels I don't mind, the tale's gotta go. It is certainly NOT a car for a diehard z collector I know that.

buyer beware for sure.

as far as price goes, I've checked that out too...in Ontario (Canada remember) I've found decent looking daily drivers for around 6-8k. (nothing fancy - cars that appear original) I've also found decent looking daily drivers on ebay etc from the southern states for around the 2 or 4k that many of you refer to as a decent price.

I've never found any z cars that I would want to go near in my area for less than $7500. - Keep in mind I've only been looking for a short time. though. Not sure if its due to different demographics, our northern climate, or the fact that you rarely see an older z on the road...maybe all of the above.

Maybe its worth the drive to florida to save a few grand :)

I'll keep looking around, told this guy I wasn't interested in buying anything until early summer...we'll see if the car is still there and if I'm still interested in it. Trying to buy with my head. I'll keep researching and cruising this site to see what I can learn...and looking at other cars as I find them.

I've got lots of time! Right now I've got two small kids a wife and a dog...a Z car is totally un practical....but thats what makes it fun!

One way I've learned to buy anything is to take your time.

Take your time if you have a $10,000 budget there are lots of cars in that range that are WAY better . Find something closer to original and modify it to your taste .At least you will know what you started with .The car you are looking at most likely will turn out to be a huge headache .Needing paint and having the flares and rear body panel with questionable work done in the past will cost big $$$ .Also dealing with someone who does not know what they have or is worse, lying about what they have never ends well . Best advice would be to walk away from this one .

I posted this before in regards to one of your posts, but you must not have read the reply. The Fairlady Z did not have an S20 engine. It had an L series, the L20A. The only S30 that had the S20 engine was the 432 (regular and R versions).

Thank you JelloBob! Thats exactly what I was coming back to say, "Walk!". Theres know way he can swear up and down on what he knows he has absolutly no proof of, physical or otherwise. Ask him for documentation or where you can go and read more information about a GT Fairlady Z. His response will be funny as he lies out of it. Yeah dude the car is worth 5 to 8 grand here in California. Check ebay and Craigslist in the rust free States and have one shipped to you or drive it back home. Check your import tax and other procedures to bring a car into Canada.

You know what your right :) I always think of the L20A as being in the Datsun trucks and Fairlady Roadsters only. Does the L20A and S20 look similar? I recal almost buying a Fairlady with a engine that looked like a S20. You know with the sparkplugs down the center. Edited by WingZr0

Now you're really confused. Your thinking of the the 4 cylinder L series right? As used in the bluebird 510 and others.

The Fairlady roadster never had an L series.

The L20A looks exactly the same as an L24.

The fairlady you saw would have had an engine swap. There were no twin cam roadsters, that I'm aware of.

Some schoolin on the L series:

4 cylinders:

L14 (also used in the 510 in various markets)

L16 (as used in the 510)

L18 (also used in the 510 in various markets, 610)

L20B (used in the 200B, 910 etc)

6 cylinders:

L20 (Cedric motor)

L23 (Cedric motor)

L20A (Fairlady Z and other JDM vechiles)

L24 (240Z, 240C, 240K, Cerdic, etc)

L26

L28

Camo I'm letting myself get caught up on the technicals here LOL, my bad. But yeah I was thinking of the Inline Four engines as being in the trucks and roadsters only. The Fairlady I saw was a Green rust bucket on ebay 2 years ago. It had what appeared to be infact a S20 engine, so I assumed that was a L20A seeing how it wasn't a 432, But the L20A is a 4 cylinder right? Anyhow back on topic follow Arnes advice, get one from the west coast, they're better and cheaper. If Floriday is closer to you then go for it, but remember thats a hurricane state so rust from a flooded car is possible. You've got eyes in Racerville, CA.
