Fuel Pump

Recommended Posts

Ok I dont think my stock electric fuel pump is operating. I cannot hear it when I turn the key to "on" without starting the Z (73 240Z). I checked the wiring and I have power back there when the key is on, but the pump doesn't work.

The manual pump works fine and the Z is running off of that.

Now here's the question. Should I replace the electric pump with an after market one and remove the manual pump or run off the manual pump?

I am sure there are benefits to both.

I have seen the fuel pump block out plates out there but I dont know the benefits to removing the manual pump.

Any Ideas?

The electric fuel pump was installed to help prevent vapor locking issue, all first gen carb'd Z's have the wiring and if original buyer complained about vapor lock the dealer would install the electric fuel pump. I think at some point the came from the factory that way. But I don't think the pump will operate unless the engine is running. On a stock engine there is no benefit to removing the mechanical pump. Maybe someone else will chime in with more info. If I were going to install an electric fuel pump in place of the original I would wire it with a relay direct off the battery with a oil pressure safety switch and not use the factory wiring, something about 40 year old wires and gas kinda scars me.

If you decide to replace the electric fuel pump look at going with one out of a gen1 RX7. Lots of folks around here are running them in their z's (including me). They are considerably quieter than most after-market pumps. I got mine new off of e-bay for $70. Here is a link...
