Bog/Bondo examples....

Took some photo's of my parts car as I've been pulling it down, and I'm really surprised that the it held together for as long as it did. Both sill panels were made up of about an inch of bog (or bondo or fiberglass, whatever) and had all these little tell tale pockmarkes.

I knew this when I bought it but I didn't realise the extent. Even the fram rails, the most structural part of the car, were bogged up! The car had no welding anywhere that I've found, just bog. Even the C pillar had bog at the top to 'hold' the roof on:stupid:

I've attached a couple of photo's for reference to show what a bog job gone wrong looks like!

First is the C pillar bog, when I cut the roof off there was a good half inch of bog on the outside here as well.... One good rain storm and my Zed would have been a convertible ROFL

This is what is left of the rear quarter and sill panel. You can almost see the ripples in the bog along the sill, and as per many dodge jobs there is mesh to hold the bog in place! Again, why you should weld all of the rust up and not bog it...

An arrest should be mad on the PO. I tlooks like they must have either let the car sit in salt water or something. I haven't seen rust that bad in anything outside of a junkyard! Glad you bought it as a parts car rather than to rebuild, that would have been very disappointing.

If the PO had taken the time and spent the money to repair the small amounts of rust to begin with, you would have a good car to work with. The rust problems were only exaggerated by the fact the bondo or bog cause even more rust by soaking up even more water and holding it until the panel was completely gone.

This is one of the main reason so many Z's have met their "death" by the rust monster, too many shoddy repair jobs.

I've seen cars with as much rust or even more that were 5 years newer if it makes you feel any better. It all depends on how well they were taken care of by PO's. Shame they couldn't have done it right the first time. :disappoin

:stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

That's the big problem; Not knowing what the PO has previously done.

As I mentioned to Alfadog some time ago, I would not consider buying a car until I had been over every inch of it with a magnet to check for BOG.

Problem is, of course, smart buggers who use bog will mix metal filings into it to try fooling people like me. However, if you use a SMALL magnet, you can FEEL the difference.

What's worse than the bastards who use metal filings is the fact that you can now ever here get bog which contains a steel wool type compound, and is specifically sold for bridging largish body work holes etc. The company should be shot, or at least someone within the company. :)

Car "repairs" like that are enough to make grown men weep!

Especially if the car was intended for a restoration or rebuild.

I have cut out all rusted sections and replaced with new patch panels on my '73, but I will still use Body Filler to regain the correct panel profiles:devious:

That, boys and girls, is what I believe the extent of "BOG" useage should be! :finger:

Mind you it CAN be a lot of work to repair rustouts completely with new metal, but it is my car and I don't want to cut corners.:classic:
