Overpriced? Your Opinion

Hey guys,

I frequent some of the other boards (i.e. zcar, etc), but I just recently joined here. I currently have a '09 370z, and today I ask for you help as I am ready to buy my first 240z.

Hey, so I am about to look at a 1971 240 with a (what the seller says) is a 1977 carbureted L28. Chassis: Approx 160k miles, engine approx 60k miles. New wheels, great interior, great paint, great body, clean title. I will know the extent of rust issues when I finally see it, but he stated that there is some surface rust (Originally CA car, now has been in AZ since the 80's).

Couple Questions:

1. What year was the L28 carbureted? I thought they were all fuel injected (sorry I searched for this, I guess it's a modification).

2. He wants 5,000...if everything checks out (let's say no rust, runs great, etc etc), does that sound fair? I would like to go lower, but not insult him LOL. I know it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay...

Please let me know what you guys think...thanks!

L28's are FI, but it's a common modification to replace the FI with carbs because they are more "tunable". I'm not a big fan of the 4Bbl carbs. on the 240.

More then likely he was unable to convert his 240 to FI, so the 4bbl carb was put there because it was inexpensive and easy. I'd replace that setup with the SU-style carbs.

That might be a parts-car. It's missing some of the Series I features, like the vented hatch and bumper guards. And what's with the marine armrest?

If it is just surface rust, then it is not rust free. But if it looks relatively solid, and there isnt anything beyond just surface rust (rust never sleeps...there will be more that is hidden. On the east coast we would say that is a fair price. But in AZ, it seems like Z's have not suffered the same fate that Z's in my area have seen.

I guess it all depends on what your plans are for the car...Weekend toy? Purist restoration? Full on track demon? If non-originality isnt a big deal to you, then I say go for it and haggle a little. Maybe $4700?

And I would agree, dump the 4-barrel and go to SU's or triples. :D
