April 30, 201014 yr comment_317799 When I bought my Z it had these home spun aluminum horns that were fabricated by the POs grandpa. They fit great under the shallow K&N filter housings. Just to show, it doesn't have to be costly to achieve the desired results. April 30, 201014 yr Author comment_317807 You know, I used to know what I just learned.... :-(Thanks to all of you for reigniting the ol' memory cells. I've contacted K&N for the correct filter number to acquire. As I don't need the backing plates or caps, I'm hoping I can save a buck or three by just getting the filters. When I get 'em, I can run my 3" horns as a matter or course. Thanks again!Frank Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/35703-air-cleaners/?&page=2#findComment-317807 Share on other sites
May 1, 201014 yr Author comment_317881 Dave, re#8....What are the dimensions of your air filter assemblies. I'm having zero luck in finding 7 x 4.5 x 4.0-4.5 K&N units.... If you have a part number that would be even better! Thanks!!UPDATE: I found K&N 56-1350 with all the correct dimensions save height. At only 3 1/4", that leaves the velocity stack only 1/4" to breathe..... I've written K&N so may get a response Monday.... Edited May 1, 201014 yr by d240zx2 Update information... May 2, 201014 yr comment_317994 I added air horns to my SUs, which are covered by the deep K&N filters. It made a noticable improvement in power. The PO had replaced the factory air cleaner with the K&Ns, but did not add the horns. An unwanted side effect of the horns is that it is nearly impossible to wiggle the air cleaners on/off over them, due to clearance issues with the strut tower and the master cylinder. The horns I used are the ones sold by MSA. I suppose I recommend them, just don't be careful you don't scratch up the paint in your engine bay when you remove the filters. If I had to do it over again, I'd go with smaller, homemade horns, and shallower filters, as those larger filters were hard the remove even without horns. May 2, 201014 yr comment_318024 I've been using the "short" K&N's (MSA p/n 11-4010 ) on my SU's for decades without horns, so I just ordered some from them (MSA 11-3014). According to their website they should work together, but I wonder if any of you have had experience with this combo.
