What exactly are these motors. I do not understand the rb20 rb25 rb26 designations. (Of course I only recently learned the L24..L28 designations.

RB - Engine series name (no idea what it stands for?)

20 / 25 / 26 / 30 = liters (2.0 / 2.5 / 2.6 / 3.0 )

D = DOCH

E = EFI injection

T = single turbo

TT = twin turbo

lets be careful about saying the RB engines are used in Nissan Skylines (and its true that they are!!) because Skylines have had all different engines, depending on which generation Skyline.

L series engines, FJ engines and RB engines (and possibly others) have all appeared under the bonnet ("hood") of Skylines.

So... RB engines are used in "later" Skylines (because I can't think of the exact models that they started appearing in... they had them in the R31 Skylines for sure, but the previous generation, ie R30??? (I think they had the FJ engines) )

From the beginning (ie once they are Nissan Skylines and longer Prince Skylines):

'69 PGC10: first GT-R ever - 4 door only - S20 engine 2.0L straight 6 Mikuni Triple Carb'ed (160hp @ 7000rpm & 18kgm of torque @ 5600rpm)

NON-GT-R's have G18 (4cyl) or L20

'70-1-2 KPGC10: first HT2000 GT-R coupe ever - (4 door also avail.) - S20 ...same...

'73 KPGC110: "Ken&Mary" Skyline GT-R (last GT-R for some time) - S20

NON-GT-R's have G16 G18 L20 single carb L20 twin carb

'74-'80 these are the painfully ugly and mostly 4cyl Skylines.....

I know that in '79 the Skyline HT200Turbo GT-E•X is powered by an L20ET (145hp @ 5600rpm & 21kgm of torque @ 3200rpm)

'81-5 DR30 made famous by Japan-market Group5 "IronMask" race car - this is the fire breathing red one sponsored by Tomica which was carburated turbo!

The street cars come in 2 and 4 door versions and are powered by the 4cyl FJ20, & FJ20ET (205hp @ 6400rpm & 25kgm of torque @ 4400rpm) for the "4valve intercooler RS-DOHC" performance version

'86-9 HR31 of which the performance version is the GTS-R which is powered by the first 6cyl RB series engine: RB20DET-R (210hp @ 6400rpm & 25kgm of torque @ 4800rpm)

'89-94? BNR32 - the re-birth of the GT-R - the least civilized of the modern GT-R's (and except for the last special edition, maybe the most desirable one?) powered by RB26DETT (280hp @ 6800rpm & 36kgm of torque @ 4400rpm)

R33 (280hp @ 6800rpm & 37.5kgm of torque @ 4400rpm) and R34 (280hp @ 6800rpm & 40kgm of torque @ 4400rpm) of which the ultimate example was the Vspec II Nür edition (ie "Nürburgring" - created to reclaim the title of fastest production car around Germany's famous track) - very limited very rare all sold out of course

The new Skyline having ditched the straight six for a V6 is no longer a Skyline - long live the Skyline...

a second look at the previous posts I noticed Ivan's comment:

"D = DOHC"

I suspect this is not the case, as the RB30DE as found in the Holden VL commodores and also the Australian delivered R31 Skylines are single cam engines, not DOHC.
