Posted May 14, 201014 yr comment_319690 How do I get the new boot on?Does the plastic end piece screw off the rod? If not does the bood slip over the plastic end piece? May 14, 201014 yr comment_319697 Look closely at the rod again. You will soon see how it comes apart. Threads, a little 7mm nut, no rocket science here. give it a good scrubbing, maybe the threads are hiding.. May 14, 201014 yr comment_319701 Slide the seat all the way back and stretch out before you start. Bend yourself backward and upside down to twist yourself under the dashboard looking up. You'll see said 7mm nut at the top of the pedal. Crack it loose. Now gently pop the knuckle loose in the engine bay and you can thread that first linkage rod out. I used a small screwdriver to pop the last of the grommet in place through the hole from inside the car, it can be a bit stubborn and try to fold up.Don't forget to re-tighten that 7mm nut. May 14, 201014 yr comment_319705 Just make sure you know where you put your wrench and you can twist your upside down body to reach it while you have one leg through the window to make the reach - if not, you got to get out of the floorboard to get the wrench in your hand and do it all again!! May 14, 201014 yr comment_319715 My comment was based on the assumption that the rod and old boot was in his hand already. Now why would you not just pop the ball off of both the pedal and the throttle linkage and take that rod out entirely before you try to undo the nut to separate the rod to put the new boot on? Bad enough having to be under the dash, let alone try to get that 7mm nut undone! That way when you put it all back together, you can make sure you get it back to the same length as it started too.I'm just saying! May 14, 201014 yr Author comment_319716 Huh???So you are saying the end that is inside the car unscrews? Has a lock nut on there? The end in the engine compartment doesn't unscrew, correct. So, like was stated above, can't I pop it off both ends and remove to undo the nut etc. i.e. it will fit through the firewall hole. May 14, 201014 yr comment_319718 Yes, the end inside the car, at the tip of the gas pedal, has the end that unscrews, but just pop that end off the tip of the gas pedal and take it off the car, then worry about getting the rod apart to replace the boot. The plastic ball on the ends of the rod fits through the hole in the firewall.Jim Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/35905-throttle-linkage-boot/#findComment-319718 Share on other sites
May 14, 201014 yr comment_319724 Just make sure you have all the slop out of all the linkages going from the gas pedal to the carbs - you'll love it or hate it later. November 14, 201014 yr comment_335974 I removed the throttle linkage to replace the boot. The linkage is bent. I don't think this is normal, am I correct? November 14, 201014 yr comment_335975 What carburetors are you running? I think this thread might be helpful. Scroll down to where it goes to talking about throttle linkages. November 14, 201014 yr comment_335978 I'm running flat tops. The car's mechanics are pretty much stock. I don't think it is affecting the throttle. It popped right back like it belonged, so guess I'll leave it as is.Thanks.
