Car wont stay running

I'm new to z cars so alot of it is foriegn to me. The problem started with a 72 240 i bought a couple weeks ago. The car a couple days ago will not start unless you get under the hood and push that red button by the battery. everytime you shut it off you have to get out and push that button before it will star again. Now this morning went to start the car and it will not run unless you hold the key in the start position which of course keeps the starter running. As soon as you let off the key it dies. I ordered a book for these cars but it wont be here for a week. Any help would be great. Thanks

Jeremy, can you tell us what color wires are going into the red button? It doesn't sound stock for a 72. Also, if you look at the links in my signature, you should be able to download a copy of the FSM.

Okay, I'll bite. Why do you mention a 72 in your post, but you list a 74 in your signature? The 74 has a seatbelt interlock. Search for interlock and you should find a post I made about jumpering it out.

I mention 72 but i also have two 74 260z cars also. I just bought the 240 a couple weeks ago. The 240 looks like it has been put together with parts from some other cars. The vin says it is a 72 and the badge in the engine compartment matches but the dash has a 260 badge on it. I'm new to these cars so i don't know what parts are from what series. (wiring etc.) But the button i have to push is on both of the 260 cars so i assumed it was stock on the 240. When the car is started it really drives and runs pretty good. Not much looks outta place but again i'm not sure what to look for.

Ya the whole car pretty much looks like the 260, what are the differences between the 240 and the 260? And what is the seatbelt interface and what does it do? The other 260's start and run just fine without having the seatbelt fastened.

i have the same problem with my car.

help please?

Your profile says you have a 73 240Z. By the way, put that information in your posts, such as in your signature. You'll get better responses that way.

If you truly have a 73, then you don't have the same problem. The seatbelt interlock was only on the 74 260Z. I suggest you start a new thread and carefully & thoroughly describe the problem you're having with your car.

Steve,

The Seat Belt Interlock WAS part of the 73 circuitry.

Here's a link to a recent discussion regarding this specific part of the circuitry:

http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38738

The wiring schematic I posted on there, showing it's for a 73 Z:

E, I stand corrected. The 73 automatic does have a relay, but it does not have an override button as described by the original poster in this thread. When Tommy said that he had the exact same problem, I was correct in saying it wasn't possible.

Of course, you did make me have to get out my own wiring diagram so I could see it in better detail. I'm going to have to read up more on this to satisfy my curiosity.
