Posted June 30, 201014 yr comment_324086 Hi, everyone. I just acquired a 260Z from a friend. This is going to be my project car, and I have to be honest and say I probably know very little about compared to the experts out there. My first Z was a 1990 300ZX NA. Then came the 2003 350Z. I still have this car. She's my mistress. Now I have the 260Z that needs a lot of work. Oh, my....does it. I've heard good things about this site, so I'll be doing a lot of reading and researching, posting pics of my project, and maybe even asking a question or two. I live in the Twin Cities - that's Minnesota for those who don't know. Anyway, I'm sure you want pics. I know I always do. June 30, 201014 yr comment_324087 Congratulations! If my personal history means anything, the "mature" Z will soon become your mistress. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/36338-new-member-on-my-3rd-z/#findComment-324087 Share on other sites
June 30, 201014 yr Author comment_324089 Thanks! I bought the car for several reasons, but I convinced my wife that it was going to be a project for me and my sons which will serve as the ultimate father/son bonding experience. I'm hoping to teach them about tools, patience, body work, customizing, and just an appreciation for automotive history. June 30, 201014 yr comment_324090 That's an excellent motivator. A friend of mine did a similar project with his son on a '73Z. It turned out to be a spectacular success. Father and son are closer than ever and the end result was a pretty nice Z car that would win trophies if ever showed. Good luck, Sir. June 30, 201014 yr Author comment_324091 Now I have to figure out how to prioritize this project. My boys all have different ideas and are ready to help. Mind you, they range from 5 to 10 years old. I'm trying to decide if I want to start rebuilding a motor that I might be getting with this car in addition to the one already in it, or if I should start dismantling the interior and see what needs to be done.I have this grandiose idea of putting a VG30DETT engine in the car and putting in a custom dash with custom gauges. I don't know.... it's all very daunting right now. Looking at the car in and out with my somewhat trained eye has made me almost sick to my stomach. I think it's excitement and also nervous anticipation of an epic battle.BTW d240, I like your avatar. That's how I eventually want my car to look like. I love those headlight covers. I'm also going to be shopping for a really nice set of wheels. Suspension is also a big item in my book, as are the brakes. June 30, 201014 yr comment_324092 There's a car that just screams "love me". Take a good look a the condition of the frame before you get too deep (time & money). June 30, 201014 yr comment_324096 Hey Dave, good to see you! That looks like a nice project. ... hrm... a 74 1/2 260z from the looks of things (bumper shocks are always the giveaway) ... lookin' a lot like mine actually, heheh. Depending on where you are I'd love to swing by and help you get a grasp on things if you ever need the help ... though I'm, by no means, an expert either. My love of the L-series (and personal bias) is going to encourage you to hold off on thoughts of an engine swap. Get that L26 running well again, swap the carbs and I'm sure you'll find your lead foot much obliged. So ... priorities (imho) Does it run? Can it move? Can it stop? Is it safe/Is it legal? Is it comfortable? Is it pretty? Oh, and welcome to the site. These guys have been good to me for the 5+ years I've been on it.
