Posted July 14, 201014 yr comment_325263 With 50 (or is it 57?) States and the possibility of having 50 or 57:stupid: different requirements for emissions testing, it would be interesting to know what the requirements are for each of the Several States.I'll start with :love:Texas: No requirement for emissions testing when the vehicle is 25 or more years of age. If licensed with "Classic" or "Antique" plates, there is no requirement for a safety inspection. July 14, 201014 yr comment_325265 Washington State is No emissions test if the Vehicle is 25 years old or older.Emission testing for those that qualify (24years or younger) is every other year of during Title transfers or sales. I think, or something like that. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/36477-states-emission-laws/#findComment-325265 Share on other sites

July 14, 201014 yr comment_325294 In California, 1976 and newer vehicles are required to have smog check inspections for registration renewals, change of ownership transactions and initial registration. July 14, 201014 yr comment_325296 Frank, I'm getting concerned that we may see more restrictive emission laws in Texas. The emission laws are county by county, with the large metropolitan counties (Houston, DFW, etc) requiring emission inspections whereas the rural areas do not as of now. From what I've read, "new vehicles" model years 1968 and later require that emission equipment be maintained in good operable condition and that replacement exhaust systems be equally effective as original, with emission testing required for vehicles 2-25 years old. So will it really be enforced? Sounds like they're supposed to look and see if the stuff is there and not disabled, but no testing is required. My son's 78 has headers/aftermarket exhaust and the EGR system has been removed, yet nothing was said at inspection. Course, we intentionally go to a location where he worked during high school to hopefully get by on any "covert" violations. The 78 had it's first Texas registration inspection when it was still in stock condition, so that may be why it is not an issue now. In the case of my 260 that I'm working on now, it has an L28 with SUs, headers, aftermarket exhaust; not a bit of the original emission equipment that was installed on that model year. It hasn't been registered in Texas yet, so it may be considered a "new vehicle" and will be subject to visual inspection of the emission equipment. I'll find out when I bring it in. Naturally I'll be going to the place where we know the people... July 14, 201014 yr comment_325299 I am in Pennsylvania and have 'Classic" plates on my 1976. No emission test but safety test is required once a year. The "Classic" plates does have some limitations on driving like less than 7K miles per year. July 14, 201014 yr comment_325300 In NJ, no testing for vehicles with historic "QQ" tags. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/36477-states-emission-laws/#findComment-325300 Share on other sites
July 14, 201014 yr comment_325306 In Wisconsin, cars older than 1996 require no emission testing during ownership, or at transfer, or at registration. When I bought mine back in 2003 - testing was still required at time of registration. I took the Z into the emission testing facility - and it was comedy. They had no idea what to look for - or how to test it. They couldn't find the OBDII connector - so they raised the hood - looked at it - closed the hood and said - we're done!Talk about a sense of relief! July 14, 201014 yr comment_325314 wellll here in phoenix, you have to smog test a car 1967 or newer. also newer cars (i think if its under 5 years old) you dont have to smog test at all.but here in arizona there are only a few counties that have smog rules. (major cities)you have to smog your car even if its registered as historic.you only have to smog every 2 years. and smog goes with each new owner without having to retest until the 2 years is up.
