I'm getting ready to start a restoration on my 73 Z. I am using a "rotiserie" style set-up that is suspended from a metal frame in the garage.

My question is; Will the bumper supports hold the weight of the car? I do plan on taking out the engine and tranny before raising the car. I'm guessing that I'm looking at about 2,000 lbs.

I've seen these done before. However, all of the setups I've seen are restoring the 'shell' of the car. This means you must remove the engine, tranny, diff, suspension, and basically everything attached to the shell.

I don't know if the rotisserie will hold the car with the suspension still attached. Somehow I doubt it.

All I can imagine with the car rotating is all the fluids running out eg. diff gearbox and such. Seriously I must agree with Mike it seem sensible to reduce the weight right down for the restore then you will get full access to any of the items that may need restoring. Difficult to remove any heavy components if you can not stabilise the item and the rotissery.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am going to try and reduce as much weight before I hang the car from the roof. But I'm sure there is still going to be some weight on it. I was just curious if someone had put the whole car on a rotiserie and where they put the supports to be bolted on the car.

Ed, I built a rotisserie for my car when I restored it. The stands mounted using the bumper mounts (in the rear) and the under-tray mounts on the frame rails (in the front).

The stands were able to take the weight of the car minus doors, engine, transmission and glass. The suspension was still on the car when I first put it on the stands. It held up fine.
