SuperDave1965 Posted July 19, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2010 (edited) I was just wondering if there is any way to tell the difference in a 4 or 5 speed from a Datsun Z car, just by looking at the case? I have two transmissions. I have a numbers that are stamped in the bellhousing portion of the trans. As near as I can tell it's 763T007 ? The other one that I have has the numbers 7115512. **** Is there anywhere that I can just look up these numbers? **** Any help would be greatly appriciated. gnosez Posted July 19, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2010 Before someone else gets touchy on the matter, next time try and conduct a search using the SEARCH button and typing in "tranny id" or "5-spd", etc. before asking questions. This topic has been covered forever. That said, early 5-spds look like 4 spds but later 5-spds ('80-83) only have one rear mounting tab. For an unknown tranny you would need to either try to run it through the gears or take it apart.....

GreenZZZ Posted July 19, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2010 The 4 speed pulled from my '72 has a plate on the top of it next to the reverse light. The 5 speed has the switch mounted elsewhere and no plate on the top. The 5 speed showed up at a Z shop on a palate from Japan in the mid 80's so it is probably from a Nissan pickup in the Japanese market.
gnosez Posted July 20, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 20, 2010 And the 5-spd shown is a 280? (hint: apple starts with this letter). A ZX 5-spd only has one tab in the rear tail (280b tranny).

A ZX 5-spd only has one tab in the rear tail (280b tranny). The 80-83 (84 if you count the RWD Maxima) has one tab but the 79 ZX still has two tabs like the 77-78 280Z...
