d240zx2 Posted August 18, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 18, 2010 Motor: Camshaft that will provide a 3500 - 6500 power band. Tuned SU or triple Weber/ Mikuni carbs. Headers. Ignition upgrade. <== These are starting points, not the end-all, be-all. Other: R200 3.9 or 4.11 diff. Hot asphalt.
madkaw Posted August 18, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 18, 2010 You know your going to hear" SEARCH", so I will be the first to say it. With 55 posts you should know how this works. I am also going for HP on my l24, but it's a road that is determined by cost and research. I have more money in my motor then i care to admit, but have no big numbers to brag about. I have poured over these Z sites and have the book on "how to modify..." and still know very little of all the options. TUNE TUNE TUNE-first, then go from there. Get a base line using a dyno or drag strip, and see if you are actually improving things as you go. do you want a fast DD or a week-end warrior? do you want to stay NA or turbo? I wanted a fast DD, something to take across country to the Z shows and also take it to do some autocrossing too. The L24 is a great motor, but much more money to modify then a chevy v-8, but that's not my cup of tea. I am shooting for 200hp at the rear wheels, more then enough for a fast car, but i have already done all the basic work(brakes, suspension,ect...) to start with.Good luck and keep those L24's going! madkaw Posted August 18, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2010 Hey frank, did you ever dyno your car again, and was the car really running that rich when you dynoed at ZCON? Many members on the sites here have questioned the validity of my dyno graph.
d240zx2 Posted August 18, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2010 No, I haven't, Steve. I gotta get those Mikunis jetted before another dyno run. And yes, the dyno crew's tailpipe sniffer only went as low as 9.4 and I was richer than that. Phew! Stinky rich. The best run I got was 131 HP @ 6700. I know the car, properly tuned, is capable of roughly 180 HP, possibly more. It takes more than 131 to get to 135 mph, and it's been there-done that. sblake01 Posted August 18, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 18, 2010 ahhh yes, i remember back in HighSchool talk about putting a Maxima? cam in the l28s?...The Maxima, at least the RWD Maxima, had an L24E. I had a 79 810 (same motor) for 6 years as a daily driver. The cam wasn't anything special.
Mikez73 Posted August 19, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 19, 2010 as far as carbs goes.... I should have an air filter for them up here in the volcanic dusty Flagstaff area? You should always have air filters. Real air filters too...not those metal grate things. My filters have been off for pics and they are off right now because I still need to sync the carbs but I have the horns blocked off to keep out bugs I'd never run an engine without filters except while syncing the carbs. BTW I have a hoist but no truck .
Rich1 Posted August 19, 2010 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2010 Are you looking to rebuild? If you want to rebuild--you may want to talk with Dave at Rebello--although their website does not mention it--they 'refresh' a lot of L24 motors. He claims that he can get 180 out of an L24 without going the 2.7 ITS motor route. http://www.rebelloracing.com/index.htmYou might also want to take a look at the November 2007 issue of Classic Motorsports--they did a L24 rebuild. A condensed version is still on their webite at http://classicmotorsports.net/project-cars/1970-datsun-240z/datsun-recieves-new-heart/
