Looking for GOOD after-market EFI

Hey all. While I'm still trying to get my 73 240Z running, I keep thinking about how much good converting my 86 Chevy PK to a TBI did. Even though there's still a couple kinks to work out, the truck runs better and got a couple more MPG (not saying much for a 200,000+ mile 350cid, but meh).

I also have a penchant for "resto-modding" cars. Most of my dream projects are taking an old, yet beautiful car and modernizing it without being too obnoxious in the process. Most visible changes are usually "period" mods.

Now for my question. I know I'm asking for a storm here, but I'd like to get the opinions of folk that have installed, or plan to install an after-market EFI to their Z. Which company or combo of companies and parts have worked out the best for all yall with more experience in this realm than me (I know, not saying a lot...again.) :ermm:

Forgive my ignorance...but what is "su"?

The Patton site looks promising. Though he mentions the Z's, I'll ask him for more detail when the budget gets closer.

[heh] I'd bet that not "pulling the trigger" has to do with cost, huh? I get that. I'm selling my other truck to fund the next daily driver. Either getting the Z up to speed or putting the big block in my full-size truck. (looking like it'll be the Z at this point)

conedodger's Jenvey suggestion looks interesting, but I can't find anything referencing Datsuns of any kind there.

Thanks guys. Please keep the suggestions coming. It'll be Oct/Nov time frame before I can fully unload on this car.

If you're looking for someone who mentions Datsun in their part numbers go to TWM's website. They have throttle bodies specifically for Datsun L-6 motors. They sell some kind of EFI system too. I mentioned the Jenvey TB only in reference to what I have on my Porsche motor. They might not even make anything for an L-6 motor. The throttle body is just a tube with a throttle plate for the air to go through. It mounts the injector but other than that, it wouldn't matter who's you use as long as it is good quality.

I mentioned the Simple Digital Systems or SDS because it is simple to tune and doesn't require a laptop interface or software you have to learn.

su-- stock carbs that came on the 240z

and about pulling the trigger, not the cost as the megasquirt system is fairly cheap, it's the learning involved in a build it yourself project and learning to tune etc that has me lagging behind.

ITB's :) (individual throttle body injection) they run around 2k-3k a kit. intake, injectors, and throttle body's and so on. dont know if they come with a computer to controll it all but im sure there are pleanty out there. will wake up your Z and make it a beast.

I've been doing the EFI learning curve as well for my 240. Patton Machine uses low impedance GM TBI injectors and you use existing SU carb bodies, manifold, throttle linkage, and air filter housing. You just drop his adapter in place of the piston and notch the domes for fuel supply if you want to keep the domes on with hidden injectors. Stock appearance with EFI technology and it can be switched back to carbs. Obviously have to change fuel pump with any carb to EFI conversion.

Jenvey, TWM, Weber, Extrudabody all have throttle bodies that can be mounted on triple carb intakes from Mikuni or Weber DCOE style carbs. Extrudabody and TWM both have options for using SU carb intakes with Dual TBIs. Both use Bosch style injectors.

Of course you could also go with a 280 EFI manifold and an aftermarket EFI ECU.

I've narrowed my choices down to PattonMachine adapters and Extrudabody dual TBIs. With these you only need two injectors. Both use existing SU manifolds that flow plenty of air. Looking at going with MicroSquirt ECU (MegaSquirt's little brother) since its already built, small weather resistant case, it can run 2 low impedance injectors, ignition control all for $400(not including sensors and other hardware).

Caen Fred is running Patton Machine adapters on his 240z
