Posted August 27, 201014 yr comment_329151 Hi guys,When I bought my 78 260Z 2+2, the owner had a battery cut off switch fitted as the battery used to drain. I finally got a chance to investigate it and it looks like the voltage regulator is draining 0.7A from the battery. I have opened it up and had a look and it seems that as soon as the battery is connected, it's making a contact on the points. I've tried adjusting it as per the Haynes manual with no change. Is there anything else I can try or should I just replace it?Thanks,Mark Edited August 27, 201014 yr by Markb Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/36901-voltage-regulator-draining-battery/ Share on other sites

August 27, 201014 yr comment_329161 Common wisdom suggests replacing the alternator and regulator at the same time. Many, many years ago, I replaced the regulator without replacing the alternator. I didn't not experience any problems, though I eventually upgraded to a higher output, internally regulated alternator. If you want to confirm the regulator as the culprit, check the battery drain and unplug the regulator. If the current drops significantly, the charging system has malfunctioned.
