I decided to create a real thread about the server UPS and power discussion on the chat box. This way we can track it.

Anyway, a few days ago I installed a 30A 125V circuit and connected a 3000VA UPS to it. I purchased the UPS about 2 years ago from Ebay on a special buy. Two of these bad boys for about $300, it was a steal. Anyway, they were NOS units never delivered to customers and in perfect shape (including batteries).

The old power schema shared a single UPS alongside some other server equipment I have in the office. Runtime on that UPS was only about 15 minutes or so. I wanted to extend the runtime of the club in the event of a power failure, so, I figured a dedicated 3000VA should give us at least a few hours. Looks like I was right, according to my calcs, this thing should give us 10 hours of runtime on a single charge (knock on wood).

The UPS is working great so far. We'll see what happens this winter when the power starts to become an issue.

Whereas my Windows certs date back to NT4. I can work in Windows fine, but admining a modern AD structure is outside my comfort zone. I take care of several dozen Linux servers (some virtual), and use a MacBook Pro as my remote console of choice.

I'll make sure Mike sees this so he can be in loop.

Arne, we are in about the same boat. I go back to Windows for Workgroups and NT 3.51. Boy have things changed. I don't even bother with certs anylonger at this point in my career. I just learn what I need for the next project because it's all going to change in 6 months anyway.

I'm with ya on the cert thing. Both my MS and Apple certs are way outdated. My RHEL cert is only current because Redhat hasn't had a major version change since early '07. But since my employer likes to see certs, I'll probably have to do the RHEL6 exam after it is released. Not quite close enough to retirement to blow it off yet.

OK, Mike!

I give up!

I'm donating again to help with whatever you need for the 'cause'.

C'mon guys!

Let's take the heat off Mike and give him the means to get whatever he needs to keep this site running as well as he has kept it running.

Thanks Mike, for all the time (and all the others who maintain it) you put into this passion of keeping alive this site we all benefit from.

Donation just sent via PayPal.

Looks like it's time for a holiday weekend web-a-thon. I kicked the last one off here:

Even a small amount will help I'm sure. Maybe others would like to chip in also.

Heres the link to donate:

I renewed my monthly subscription last week.

Thanks to all the mods for providing the best Z site out there.

Maybe we can buy that APC Automatic Transfer Switch if we raise $600.

John
