Posted September 17, 201014 yr comment_331085 Picked-up my rebuilt 77' 5-speed transmission from the shop today. Looks like they did a nice job. They replaced the seals, bearings & syncros. The gears all looked good, and spacing of components between gears, etc, was all within spec.I put together a rpm vs. gearing comparison spreadsheet. (attached). I'll install the 5-speed after the rainy season starts and see how it drives. I don't think I'll need to change-out the rear end, but can do that later, if required.RPM Chart.xls Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37128-rebuilt-5-speed/ Share on other sites

Mine is making noise in 5th gear and would like to know a ball park estimate here. September 18, 201014 yr Author comment_331090 It was $695 at a well respected local transmission shop. He completed the job in less than 2 weeks!I got 3 estimates. The low estimate was $495, but I found out the shop had a bad reputation for quality of work. The high estimate was $825. September 18, 201014 yr comment_331133 Has anyone here done this rebuild themselves? I bought a 5 speed that will need one and was wondering how difficult it is? September 18, 201014 yr comment_331152 Has anyone here done this rebuild themselves? I bought a 5 speed that will need one and was wondering how difficult it is?I just went down that road, I had my 4spd blew up. You will need the FSM. Go here http://www.xenons30.com/reference.htmlIt was over my head, way too many parts. I bought a used 5spd($200),parts for clutch related items, seals etc ($150.00).The labor ($400).The mechanic double pinned the forks. Apparently the roll pins shear over time. The average price for a rebuilt trans was $1,200. Problem is parts are replaced at the shops discretion so I opted to get my own trans. I found NOS synchros only from one shop, most others are made in China.-Rick Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37128-rebuilt-5-speed/#findComment-331152 Share on other sites
