Hey guys,

I've been away for a few months, to be honest after almost two years of restoring my low vin 240 I simply just burned out. It got to the point where if the shop said "oh, another 4-6 weeks" I just said fine.....I was over it and just put it out of my mind for a while.

Last week they called and said they would be dropping it off to me so I could finish the interior and have the mechanic finish up the tuning. The problem is the guy who was doing it is gone, so I have to finish it or find someone else.

The car starts and runs great, but it's still missing the air cleaner black hoses, and it seems there are severeal vacuum leaks. Where can I find the hoses (or are they generic hoses at the any auto parts store).

I also broke my ankle last Friday and had surgery yesterday so I can't get mobile for a while, no weight bearing for 6 weeks. I can try and post some engine pictures next week but if anyone has a source for the hoses or where to check for vacuum leaks let me know.

I looked at black dragon and MSA but didn't see the air cleaner hoses.

Actually, it depends on whether you're trying to restore OR refresh/rebuild the car.

The difference is that in Restoring, you HAVE to find the original OEM / OEM style hoses, or as close as possible. The further you are from the original style will cost you points (AFAIK) at a concours meet.

If on the other hand all you are looking for is proper functionality, then just use the appropriate fuel rated hose for anything that comes into contact with gasoline or fumes and heater hose for those which come into contact with the coolant.

If you can find a Nissan parts book for your year (sometimes on e-bay - the book is easier to go through than the web site) you can get the best of both worlds if the Nissan is still making the part. Usually there is no freight added and most of these dealers will like to assist somebody bringing one of these cars back to life. My local Nissan dealer parts manager gives me all my parts at body shop pricing but I do have to furnish the Nissan numbers to him - some parts are no longer made but some are. Most parts that he has to order are ususally 2-3 days out but I don't mind for OEM parts..........good luck on your project.

No matter you have a reproduction of the the dealer's parts book, very few OEM parts are available and reproductions are most of the time garbage or poorly designed.

For some hoses, you have to be very creative to buy some OEM still available (braided) to make your own if they need specific radius to fit the original.

My experience of ten years owning an original never restored 72 Z.

Well, I have a small problem. I don't have any of the hoses to go by, I thought the mechanic had them in a box but they are gone. Does anyone know the sizes I would need?

I know I need every hose that goes on the air cleaner. Also, after the air cleaner has its hoses where else should I look for any vacuum leaks. I've tried to look at high res photos of some original series 1 cars but didnt know if there may be something lower that I'm missing.

Would a vaccume leak cause the engine to lose power under load? It starts and revs wonderful, but as soon as you give it some gas (under load) it wants to "miss" and lose power. Before my mechanic moved he said he took it up and down the street and it ran great.......When that drive took place the air cleaner wasnt even on, and now that everything is on it wants to hesitate and lose power.

Thanks for any help on hose size or mechanical input.

Anything attached to the air cleaner will not be part of the vacuum system. On my '71, you have the filtered source for the PCV (runs to the valve cover), the fuel bowl vents (run to the carb fuel bowls), and the filtered source for the air pump (though that's now been replaced by a cork).

On my car, the PCV source has been replaced by a 3/4" hose, looks like some reddish garden hose. The fuel bowl vents look to be 4mm fuel hose.

If it ran "great" before putting the filter and cleaner box on, I'd try resetting the fuel mixture. You could be lean, as the backplate of the air cleaner has stacks on it over the carb inlets that greatly increase air velocity.
