Posted September 26, 201014 yr comment_331815 Hi? my car starts and runs for seconds and dies. so yesterday i worked on car and this is what i observed. i did a fuel pressure check. when i turn the key on the pressure build up to 39 psi and when i start the car the pressure slowly goes down and when it reach to 10 psi the car dies. Second test, i went to the store and bought me a long hose, i disconnect the short hose from the fuel pump and i connected the long hose to the fuel pump. i took the long hose and put it into the nozzle of the gas container ( container that we use to buy gas when you run out gas on the road) i turn the car on and the guage reads 35 psi. I turned the key to start and car started and stayed running till the gas in the container runs out and fuel pressure stays at 35 psi the entire time. When the gas in the container ran out, i went and buy another one gallon and hook it back up. but this time i did not get any fuel pressure reading on the gauge and i tried to start the car, it turns but no start. i can hear the fuel pump but it sounds different. I hooked the fuel pump back to the car gas tank and still no pressure. What next should i do? how do i clean the fuel pump?how do i clean the gas tank without having to remove it?Is there a filter in the gas tank that i can take out and clean? Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37207-76-280z-gas-tank-and-fuel-pump-problem/ Share on other sites
September 26, 201014 yr comment_331819 You shouldn't have run the pump until it was empty. There was no real need. The fact that it ran proprely from the gas can proved that the problem was in your tank. What were you trying to accomplish by running it out of gas? Anyway, it takes a while to prime the system when you run it out of gas so that's likely why it's not starting. Don't mess with the fuel pump. You can't clean the gas tank without removing it, at least not effectively. Best to have it professionally done, especially an EFI tank. Some people have put an inline filter on the input side of the pump to temporarily solve this problem but at the rate you say the pressure drops, I'd say you need to clean the tank. September 26, 201014 yr comment_331826 There is a small V shaped screen at the inlet to the fuel pump that becomes clogged with the rust silt that is in the tank. Remove it wit a small pick and tap it up side down on a clean white piece of paper this will show you what is floating in th tank . The Tank MUST be removed to have it cleaned and sealed properly . Running the pump dry is never good . The fuel cools and lubricates the pump and they tend to burn out if run dry for any period of time . It may have just lost its prime if you still hear the pump working try using a small funnel to fill the hose connected to the fuel pump and always have a fire extinguisher handy when working with exposed fuel !!
