Posted October 11, 201014 yr comment_333190 Why do we HAVE to cut the floor to mount the fuel cell? Can it just sit inside the trunk with mounting straps? I never plan to take my car to the track, just weekend street driving. someone took all the vent lines and such off my my stock gas tank and I just have this (perhaps wrong) thought that it would be cleaner/better to get one of the summit racing fuel cells and mount it inside the trunk. is there some general knowledge i dont have? or did I miss a memo on why everyone cuts their floor? I searched google and the Grand National guys just mount the fuel cell in their trunk, no cutting. October 11, 201014 yr comment_333191 Keep the stock tank. The fuel cell doesn't do anything for you, especially the plastic type shown above, except to make putting AN fittings on the fuel lines a bit easier. A good road racing fuel cell is a lot heavier than the stock tank and costs ~$500. The proper way to install it is to put it in and then make a barrier between the driver and the cell, so that makes the job doubly difficult. The main difference between the Z and the GN is that the GN has a firewall behind the rear seat, and the Z is open, so if you got hit in the rear and your plastic tank split, the gas is going to be right there with you. October 11, 201014 yr Author comment_333192 right now when i try to fill up it stops every gallon or so. Is it because the vent lines are tapped off? If so, will routing the lines this way allow me to fill up properly?: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9504&d=1128801645 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37362-do-we-have-to-cut-the-floor-for-a-fuel-cell/#findComment-333192 Share on other sites
October 11, 201014 yr comment_333193 Yep. I didn't have that schematic and so when my brother in law bought a Z with rotted hoses we just hooked the top and side vents together and ran them to the filler neck. Worked fine.
