October 18, 201014 yr comment_333735 Are you looking for the 280Z or ZX 5 speed? If you can't find one in Oregon. Try Roger at the Z barn--I know he has a few. http://www.zbarn.com/ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37426-looking-for-a-5-speed/#findComment-333735 Share on other sites

October 18, 201014 yr comment_333753 Either will go in nicely. The difference between the two is the gear ratios. The 280Z 5-speed is more street friendly with a wide-ratio set-up. The ZX 5-speed is a close-ratio box with a shorter 1st gear and numerically lower 5th gear. October 18, 201014 yr comment_333762 I'm in north Idaho and bought several zx 5 speeds. The most I've paid is $100. Taken from this post http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1957"[I]The stock transmission gears are as follows:240Z 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th4 speed type A 3.549 2.197 1.420 1.004 speed type B 3.592 2.246 1.415 1.00280Z5 speed 3.321 2.077 1.308 1.00 .864280ZX 5 speed1980 3.062 1.858 1.308 1.00 .7731981-on 3.062 1.858 1.308 1.00 .745As I recall, the zx speed has a slightly stronger 5th gear. I truly doubt anyone will notice the difference in a .745 ratio versus an .864Put in the zx unit, they are plentiful, cheap, and reliable. October 18, 201014 yr comment_333767 I truly doubt anyone will notice the difference in a .745 ratio versus an .864I disagree. I noticed the difference. When I bought my 78 it had the stock 5 speed in it. I later put a 84 Maxima 5 speed in it; same as an 83 ZX 5 speed. The highway mileage was slightly better but the car didn't pull as strongly in 5th. Later, I did pretty much the same conversion with my 79 810 with the same results.
