March 5, 201312 yr Author comment_416892 Used the Engine Bolt Kit from Datsun Spirit. Nice fresh bolts made for an easier job. Got the block painted up, using paint from Les. Cooler placement was a photogenic accident. Shifter on the Roadster Box. Two springs saddle the shifter as a return, those needed to be rebuilt. Cleaned up the transmission. March 5, 201312 yr Author comment_416893 Threw on a spare valve cover to drop in the motor. Things came together nicely on Saturday. Got the motor in, and the Z-Therapy carbs installed as well. Valve cover is off at powder coating. Still need a crank-pulley, as mentioned earlier, and to hook up the remainder of the peripherals. Transmission/ driveshaft installed without issue as well. This is a .40 over L24, original to the car, with a beautifully machined E31 head and some fresh 4-Screw SU's. Should've done this 3 years ago... #24,140 got a new heart the same day: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37564-hls30-01222-project/?&page=6#findComment-416893 Share on other sites
March 13, 201312 yr Author comment_417644 That throttle knob on eBay recently caught my eye, but a sale price of $153 was a bit rich for my blood, considering the car still isn't running again yet. For now, my throttle-control will continue to use a backwards choke knob. Keep your eyes peeled for me. If anyone is curious how that mechanism looks, here's a shot. Got the valve cover back from powder coating. Will be sanding off the lettering in awhile, and I'm hoping once the restored airbox is on there, it'll all come together as a nice clean package. March 17, 201312 yr comment_418102 Great work on the engine. It looks so easy when looking at the pictures, but I guess we all know there's lots of work behind all that progress! March 19, 201312 yr Author comment_418341 Thank you both. I'm in a bit of a holding pattern, waiting for parts to come back from Zinc-Plating, to include the fuel-rail. I did finally get a new Crank Pulley though. Failed to order one prior to installing the motor, and didn't want to re-use the old part. Discussions with some members on this board (Thanks Guy) helped direct me to the L28 pulley; P/N: 12303-N3600. March 19, 201312 yr comment_418346 Will you be bringing the car up to Carlisle for the East Coast Z Nationals/Import Show in May? March 19, 201312 yr Author comment_418353 Hi Chuck,I hadn't considered it until now. Didn't realize it was only a 2-hour drive. I'll talk it over with a friend to see if he wants to road-trip up there with his '75. Cheers,Bill Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37564-hls30-01222-project/?&page=6#findComment-418353 Share on other sites
March 20, 201312 yr comment_418435 It'll be a good show for the Z folks this year. Peter Brock will be there and Nissan is bringing up his BRE 510 road race car. My brother emailed Carl Beck to see about getting his BRE 240Z up here, too. I'll have a 5 vendor spaces full of Z stuff for sale. I'm thinking of bringing 5 Datsuns and a Lotus Elise to show. I hope you can make it. :-)Chuck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37564-hls30-01222-project/?&page=6#findComment-418435 Share on other sites
March 22, 201312 yr Author comment_418614 Here's something I ran into the other night: I had to replace the choke cables, as the ones originally with the car were chewed up badly. No problem, had a spare set lying around for some reason. Went to attach them to the SU's, however, and they're woefully short. To the extent that once they're connected to the carbs, they're stretched tightly across the dome of the SU. Did Series-I cars have longer cables, due to the placement of the knobs in comparison to later cars? I don't believe they're kinked anywhere, but will double-check. It's always something... March 22, 201312 yr Author comment_418615 You can see the choke cables in this picture, still unattached, but it shows how short they are. April 3, 201312 yr Author comment_419485 Wrenched down too hard on the old thermostat housing while putting in the sending unit, and cracked the housing. It's car-ma for trying to put old parts on a fresh engine. Point taken - Ordered a new thermostat housing. Picked up the fuel rail, along with some other misc. engine/ engine bay parts from Zinc Plating. Will install these this week, and hopefully over the weekend the car will be back on the road. Still need to fix the Choke-Cable situation, but thanks to a few forum members (Wade/LeonV) I think I've got a solution there, cutting down the extra-long '73 wires to the appropriate length. Barring any unpleasant surprises, this should be a fun, rewarding weekend.
