What engine have I bought?

I recently bought a short block from a private seller (he said it was from a 72 240Z). You can't have too many spare parts right? I didn't even unwrap it till today. I noticed it looked like factory notching of the exhaust valves on the block, so I assumed it was an L26......right? Wrong......upon closer examination, the serial numbers do read L24, but the number is 321,302!!! I thought the L24 Z engines stopped at 172,732. What in Hell is this motor? Guy

The engine block is painted a mint metalic green.....I'm just wondering what parts I can salvage if any......would like to use the crank, rods front cover etc.for spares......the block looks OK.....no water erosion. The oil pan is gone.......maybe the whole works should go to "Mt. Trashmore"!! Won't be the first bad investment I've made.......won't be the last! :stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

L24 Z engine = rear sump

L24E 810/910 engine = front sump

With no oil pan it'd be easy to check which it is. There are two bosses and only one will be drilled and tapped for bolts.

Early L24E will have the good rods with 9mm bolts. That's about the only 'good' salvagable item.

Hi Guy :)

Could be a diesel block, they had L24 sized bores but its the crank that made capacity to 2.8 litres. Notched block in those? Maybe. But the stamped engine number is L24 right? Hmmmmm.

Have you looked down at the bottom of the block, where N42, F54, P30 etc lives to see what yours is?

Post a few close up pics if you get time.

Don't throw it out man....seal it up in a plastic bag or sell what you don't need.

Perhaps not as desirable as an L28, sure, still good to have though.

Cheers. :classic:

It's marked P30 on the block with the oil pick-up in the front. The factory had to have painted the block that minty-green color....... no one in their right mind would have painted it that color! I'm wondering what stroke the crank is.......do I have the early L24 rods or the L26-L28 rods. I may only get a spare front cover and a spare set of 9mm rod bolts out of the deal. OZ .....what will it cost me to ship it to Australia? You can have it for one kangaroo steak! :bulb:
