Posted November 23, 201014 yr comment_336684 hi! I recently changed out the shocks on my car and everything has been going good, until i heard clunking. I checked where the axle is attached to the hub and the bolts were coming loose so I tightened them all up. I then drove around but its still clunking, noticeably. its clunking in the left rear only, and it only clunks when I let my foot off the gas. Any ideas why this is happening? are the problems related, or am I missing something? all help is appreciated! November 23, 201014 yr comment_336687 It could be the u-joints. Also, look for more loose/missing bolts. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37751-clunking-rearend/#findComment-336687 Share on other sites
November 23, 201014 yr comment_336688 A question for you. Does the noise occur when you do gear changes? I ask as I had the same clunk noise coming from the rear end of my Z when I first bought her. How bad are the mustache bar bushings? How is the mount that supports the diffy? JanP.SDam Steve J beat me too this. Bolts, all of them. Check and recheck. Any bolt you removed or messed with take a look at it. November 23, 201014 yr comment_336706 Check the top of the strut. The nut up there clunks when it isn't properly torqued. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37751-clunking-rearend/#findComment-336706 Share on other sites
November 23, 201014 yr Author comment_336710 thanks for all the suggestions! it only happens when im off the gas though, would that really be because of bolts? and for pormorza, at the moment the cars automatic, but even still, its only when I let off of the gas pedal does it clunk. November 23, 201014 yr comment_336715 Yep, the old clunk. I'm sure mine is backlash in the diff. Its done it since I bought the 240 and I tightened and checked everything. Its no worse or better so I view it as a feature of this great little car.:classic: My mechanic comments on the backlash every time he checks it for a WOF. November 23, 201014 yr Author comment_336717 would it just randomly start clunking though? it didn't do that when I bought it.. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37751-clunking-rearend/#findComment-336717 Share on other sites
November 23, 201014 yr comment_336721 It might appear to be coming from the left rear but don't count on it. Sounds can travel. Is there any play in the UJ where the spline goes into the diff?. I had that problem with an old '63 Holden. If you've double checked the torque on all bolts and still get the "Clunk" when you take your foot off the pedal, I'd be inclined to check for play in the drive shaft UJ's. November 23, 201014 yr comment_336722 My 72 clunks everytime i rapidly press clutch and change gear. Even yours is automatic, it still might be the differential cluncking. It's quite common or so i've read. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37751-clunking-rearend/#findComment-336722 Share on other sites
