November 23, 201014 yr comment_336770 hi! I recently changed out the shocks on my car and everything has been going good, until i heard clunking. I checked where the axle is attached to the hub and the bolts were coming loose so I tightened them all up. I then drove around but its still clunking, noticeably. its clunking in the left rear only, and it only clunks when I let my foot off the gas. Any ideas why this is happening? are the problems related, or am I missing something? all help is appreciated! How recent is "recent"? If you drove it for a week or two or more and it was quiet, then it got noisy when the bolts came loose, you might have worn something out when the bolts were loose. And you probably mean where the half-shaft is connected to the axle, not axle to hub? I don't think that you need to remove the axles to change the shocks. Some people can see a loose u-joint by sticking a screwdriver in it and prying around while it's on the car. It's easier to see though if you take the half-shaft off and examine it up close in the light. The diff mount usually clunks during shifting as the nose of the diff lifts up then drops back down on the mount. My understanding... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37751-clunking-rearend/?&page=2#findComment-336770 Share on other sites
November 23, 201014 yr comment_336771 Just an observation here. 240 and early 260 diffs have been known for years to have a backlash clunk. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/37751-clunking-rearend/?&page=2#findComment-336771 Share on other sites
November 23, 201014 yr comment_336788 Just an observation here. 240 and early 260 diffs have been known for years to have a backlash clunk. It's not a backlash clunk. That's the first thing people suspect and the last place to actually make noise. It's almost always bushings or the front mount.Search "diff clunk" and you'll find all kinds of info, including some really good fixes like the Ron Tyler diff mount.
