Door handle

What is really interesting is the standard BD on-line catalogue has them at $19.95

http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/zr/full.aspx?Page=16

while that page Jeff referenced has them at $34.95 and $29.95.

Seems like either way that's a heap better than Singapore....

Putting the door handles from Blackdragon shows me a price of $39.90 for both with $10.75 S&H. Higher prices that Jeff referenced, it would be pretty close to what it would be to order from Singapore. The different prices for BDA are even more surprising when you consider that they are for the exact same part number. Something strange is happening with their web page.

I'd say to order the door handles from BDA.

Very unlikely. Like I said earlier though, you don't NEED a new handle. The fix is free and takes less than an hour to do both sides. You need only a few simple tools that you likely have.

Sigh....... ever get the feeling your mouth is moving but there's no sound coming out ? ;)

You need to put a big red circle around the area in the pic , with lots of arrows and stuff.....

My bad. I didn't read closely until I got toward the bottom of the thread. The only reasons to replace the handles are for cosmetic purposes or for the handle breaking toward the outside.

You read my mind. I was thinking the same thing and was going to draw on the picture in MS Paint.

Can anybody help explain the process? I'm out of spit and I'm too busy right now to mark up the picture. :stupid:

Jan (Pomorza);

I don't know at what point your understanding drops off, so I'm going to explain it in very basic terms. Hopefully noone feels they've been slighted by what/how I explain it. I'm writing this in hopes that ANYONE who reads this thread in the future, that needs to read down to this point, will at this point go... ding!!! I get it!!

The door handles on the 240, 260 and the 280* (up to 7-76) used the SAME Left Hand and Right Hand door handles. While the micro-fiche DOES show different part numbers for each, in practice owners who have had both handles out of the car and compared them side by side note that there is no discernable difference before the rod and rod linkage are inserted. (* in the US Market)

It may be that it was intended to have the RH and the LH be different, but nobody seems to know what that difference IS or is SUPPOSED to be.

As such, if you look at the handles, you will note that (see picture) the Hinge points have a lever that protrudes into the body on both hinges. It is on that lever that the Rod that actuates the door latch mechanism is connected to.

On the LH side (the driver's side) that rod is on the RIGHT hand lever.

On the RH side (the passenger's side) that rod is on the LEFT hand lever.

Since the handle mechanisms are essentially the SAME, all you have to do to swap the current LH door handle into a RH door handle is swap the location of the rod, that is from the RIGHT hand lever to the LEFT hand lever.

Conversely, to swap the current RH door handle into a LH door handle is swap the location of the rod, that is from the LEFT hand lever to the RIGHT hand lever.

The door handles are now configured for the OPPOSITE door that they came off of.

Does this clarify this?

FWIW

I'm having a similar problem. My door won't open from the outside but can be opened from the inside. So I took off the door panel and found when looking downwards through the window slot that there is a nub, which is connected to a rod that connects to the door handle, that seems to have dislodged itself from bracket/hinge looking assembly. Not sure if it broke off or just got loose or something because I can't see the side view of the assembly due to the angle I'm at.

The very 1st diagram from this website provided above can clarify the rod and nub I'm talking about.

http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icata...l.aspx?Page=16

It shows the handle, lock mechanism and retainer in bold. The rod and nub is drawn in a lighter shade.

So that rod and nub when I lift the handle up will in effect push down but the nub itself somehow slid up the rod a bit when it initially "broke" and will now only barely touch the bracket/hinge when I lift the handle up all the way. I think this nub before it slid up sat firmly and attached on top the bracket/hinge so that when the handle is lifted the rod and nub pushes down onto the bracket/hinge and opens the door. I've also pushed down on the nub but it doesn't seem to want to move down. Not sure what I should do.

Anyone ever have a similar type of problem that would like to share their experience on how they fixed this?

I also noticed that all these Z sites that offer door handles don't include the rod so I don't think buying a handle itself will solve my problem.

Anyways thanks for reading.

Tommy

This is the page he's talking about: http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/zr/full.aspx?Page=16

I think the attached picture shows things better for what he's trying to describe.

Tommy, I'm trying to remember what the inside of the door looks like. It's been a while since I was digging into it. I think the plastic piece clamps to the rod. If the plastic piece is not near the top of the rod, try putting it back into place. If the plastic piece is broken, I'm not sure if/where you could get a replacement without buying a new handle.

Anyone else is free to jump in to clarify or correct anything I wrote.
