Jared's Selling His Build

Is $50K the reserve or the start price? If you set the car to start at your reserve, and then pay ebay for a reserve price, that's not very smart. I would imagine his reserve price is higher. $75K or something. He was asking $100K before. It's a super clean build, but that doesn't justify the price. I agree with Stephen, the car is everything a very expensive Z should not be. Here is a previous Hybrid Z thread about it with lots of arguing over value: http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/95696-so-did-you-guys-see-the-125000-s30-yet/

"Thousands invested, will take hundreds." Happens every day. Not in a life time is that car "worth" a hundred grand, but undoubtedly the amount invested approaches that. In real estate terms, it is radically "over built". I'd have to say that most of us are upside down in our cars, it is a matter of how much.

Pretty much. If you view building up your car as an investment (as may be the case here, since he is selling it seemingly right after finishing?) you WILL be disappointed.

This is probably true of any car out there, and definitely true of cars like ours that were mass produced.

After 17 years of ownership of my 60' MGA, I made a few bucks when I sold it, but basically broke even. I've probably got more $ in 240Z than I can expect to get for her in probably 10 years.

However, that's not why most of us own these cars. Like my MG, (but more so), I expect to get more than my investment back in the sheer enjoyment of driving my classic Z.

This is a great country!! You can spend YOUR money any way YOU want to and nobody can say a word about it.. Yes, people may call you crazy but hey, in the end it's your money.

FWIW, here's a consideration... One can buy the latest BMW M-something (insert number here) coupe with the big V-8 high output engine for about $100k (give or take a couple grand). Anybody can walk into any BMW dealer anywhere and get the same car for roughly the same money, in the color of their choice. On the other hand, if one would rather have a classic 240Z in lime green, which is built such that the performance is comparable to the Beemer AND there isn't another like it.. then this may be the right car for that person.

In the end, everything is relative to the person holding the cash. There may be someone out there that has to have this car, then again maybe not. There are more than a few of us with this Z disease! For me and the early 260Z that I am prepping for paint... If I can make it "like new" for $10-15k less than I'd spend on a brand new Subaru or Toyota 'belly-button car' (everybody has one), I consider myself ahead of the game. Wish me luck!!

+99% of the cars on the road are worth less than what the owner paid for them. I have built a couple of old Z's. Both ended up costing in parts about what a new an econo-box would. I don't consider this to be money badly spent. I drive my 240Z every day, I have a great time tinkering with it and when I do sell it I bet I get more back than if I had bought the econo-box instead.

In other words, tinkering with Z's is my hobby. Money wize, I don't expect to break even on this hobby any more than if I golfed instead.:D

To the layman, this is just another engine swapped 240Z. These types of cars never get used to their fullest performance potential, and usually end up in a car collection somewhere. So the logical question is since you can build one visually identical to this for 50% of the money, why would you buy this one?
