There are several posts contained in the forums that describe a choke bracket to remount the choke lever onto the transmission tunnel. My choke lever is getting very difficult to operate in it's factory location and weather is getting cold enough to mandate the use of the choke in the mornings..

I'm surprised that MSA (or an enterprising Z owner) hasn't jumped on this opportunity - especially since every 240Z seems to be afflicted with this problem <g>

Not if you take the time to straighten the wires and lube them properly. I did mine 9 years ago, still functioning properly on the OEM Console mount.

More often than not, due to improper placement of the sheathing and/or bends introduced while mounting the console that the wires get hard to operate.

Pull the wires out of the sheath, examine the wire itself and using a two pairs of pliers or some form of clamps (I used a sheet metal vice-grip) straighten out the wire until it's as straight as you can get it. It will take a few light bends from various angles to get it straight. Check the sheathing, it should also be free from major bends. Lube the sheathing before you insert the wire and you should be fine for years to come.

That article that discuses a transmission mount for the choke lever is for the "Series II" console, as the "Series I" also had the slot for the Hand Throttle.

Hi Scott, +1 for EScanlon's advice to clean and lube the cables. That is why they're stiff. Been there, done that. The other problem is that with '73 and '74 cars the cables were moved to the rt. side of the engine making them more than twice as long as the earlier cars. When I put A/C in my '73 I moved the cables back to the original position. There is a dimple in the sheet metal of the firewall where the old choke cable location was. I drilled it out with a hole saw, installed a new grommet (available from MSA), shortend the cables (one longer than the other to reach the front carb...don't make them too short or you WILL be sorry...measure three times cut once...be sure to pull the wire back behind where you want to cut), and have been happy ever since. The choke works with very little effort so no broken choke knobs. Good luck.

Take the time to lube and straighten and they will be like new. Mine was awful before the restoration and now they are smooth and respond wonderful.

Find a good spray graphite lube

Its black and messy but control cables love it.

If lubing the cable doesn't work and you still want to get a bracket then go to your local home supply and get about a foot of 1/2 flat metal. Check the gauge of the metal to see how flexible it is.

Use the attachment you have as a template. All you need to do is experiment with the bends, test fit and bolt everything together.

It took me about 45 minutes and believe me...fabrication and me have had a life long battle!
