Thanks everyone for the help, trying to track down some Red Line MT90 and Red Line 75W90 gear oil, best deal i can find is around $70 for 3 qts of MT90 and 2 qts of 75W90 gear oil. Just need to get it ordered and hope all the plugs come out with out any trouble

Amazon carries it for about $12 a qt. if you can't find it locally. BTW, I don't think you need that much. I'm remembering just about 1 qt. for the diff and 2qts. for the trans. I'm not near my FSM, but you might want to check that first. No point in buying extra. You won't need to change it for a long time.

I thought i did the math correct, Transmission takes 4 1/4 pts. and Differential , if i have a R180 2 1/8 pts. or 2 3/4 pts. for the R200. Sorry this is one thing i have no idea what i have :disappoin i just calculated with 2 3/4 pts.

Then yep, you are correct. I guess I was basing the trans on what I actually used. It must have at least 1/8 qt. trapped. As for the diff, I was thinking of the R180. You have an R200 in your manual trans 280, so it will take over a qt.

I've been told to apply lots of heat to the fill plug for easier removal. I still haven't gotten the plug out of my '78. I filled my 260's R200 through the vent since the diff was out and I couldn't get the plug loose.

Red Line sell two types of 75w90 gear oil, one just has high performance and the other is "NS". Which of the two do you recommend for the differential.

Btw, not trying to hijack the thread but as we are speaking about different oils etc for differential, how can you get rid (or at least quiet down a bit) differential noise without rebuilding the whole diff? (somebody say SEARCH now)

So heat is ok for the differential fill plug? Mine won't budge. Add on edit: what size wrench will fit male fill plug? 3/4's ?

I used heat on the aluminum around the plug. Aluminum expands more with heat than steel and, apparently, Nissan used a thread sealer on the plugs that softens with heat. My fill plug would only move when the area was hot and would bind up again when it cooled. Heat makes a big difference.

I use a big crescent wrench on the male plugs.

The fill plug is 17mm IIRC. I have to use a piece of tubing over the wrench to get enough leverage to loosen the plug every time. The darn thing always gets too tight after use. Darn tapered threads anyhow.

A heat gun for a few minutes then 11/16's open end wrench tapped with short sledge hammer got the fill plug loose. It held 1 and 1/2 qts. Redline 75w90. The old looked like Sunkist and Coca Cola mixed coming out, kinda rusty brown. Thanks for the help.
