RB30 curiosity

Thinking about an rb30 build for my 76 z. Does anyone know where to source one from and what would be required for the swap(what type of trans, ecu, wiring harness etc.)

You might try over at http://forums.hybridz.org/ they have more information on engine swaps and major upgrades. They have a whole sub-forum dedicated to the RB engine swaps, mostly RB25/26 but there is some discussion of RB30.

I have driven an R31 Skyline with the RB30 engine in it. Smooth, torquey and quite fuel efficient is how I would describe it.

That's how I would describe a well sorted L28 as well. I really don't see much of an advantage by running an RB30.....once the bonnet was closed nobody could really notice much of a difference.

But if you really must gotta have one.......

Hybrids.got it. The rb30 ideals comes from vague research on the blocks weight balance and of course increased displacement.

And looking for something a little more that a rb26 swap. I built and a l28et and it was a enjoyable torquey Z. Looking for more power. From a uncommon peer plant.

More power than an L28et? Some guys are getting 400 rwhp and as many torques from these 'old' engines......and you want more power than that?

An RB30 is good.

With an RB25DE[T] head on it is even better;)

The RB30 was a Japanese engine sourced for the 1986 Holden Commodore in the Oz market.

A great engine, don't get me wrong, BUT, it was a single cam, 12 valve engine with a dodgy optical distributor.

Take its' head off and replace it with a twin cammer 24 valve head and BELOW AND HOLD, a very nice combination:love:

The RB series is renown for robustness and the typical Nissan compatibility across the range allows you to build a hybrid very easily.

e.g. the RB30 block has a cast in boss exactly where you need to drill for the timing belt idler pulley mount required for the twin cam conversion:classic:

As a bonus, when you get the head off an RB30, the pistons have a 4 valve cutout!

So obviously the engine was originally designed for a 4 valve head!

Nissanman thanks for the info, gives me a new bases for research. The l28et I had was was pushing 368hp at 312trq. Very strong and quick z. I would never talk bad about that motor I liked it! But with this z build I wanted something different, I'm sure the power from an a rb30 would offer me a new kind of power that I'm interested in.

My previous z was a complementary built of what a l28et s30 should be built. I want this z to take on all new characteristics and push my creativity and Pride to a new level. Btw the Z's I build are purpose built circuit racers. So while on the vague topic of Rb30 if anyone has seen a full racing set up like this let me know where to look

I've got a condensed FSM for the Holden version of the RB30.

If you need me to scan you any parts let me know.

The Holden version is basically identical to the Nissan engine fitted to the R31 Skyline barring the omission of the text NISSAN on the parts:rolleyes:
