No start & electrical issues

grnsky

Recommended Posts

I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my '73. It ran fine until I had a battery short out Sunday due to a long period of storage and a quick charge. I put in a new battery, and just like grnsky, I have brake lights, but no activity on key turn- no fuel pump, no anything. Also no headlights, running lights, dash lights. But the brake lights work! That seems to point to the ignition switch I would guess, but it's odd that all was well and now I've got nothing. Fuse block has all good fuses, I can't find any inline fuses, and it doesn't appear to have fusible links like my '74 had.

Let me know if there's anything else to check or if I need to go through the painful circuit by circuit process described above...

thanks in advance Dan

Dan,

Might be a good time to pull the Ammeter and inspect it. If you've checked all fuses, inline fuses and connections, the ammeter may have been destroyed internally. it is a possibility and I've seen it a few times.

You might wanna also pull the fuse box and look for unsoldered lines (wires that you can't see from above. Remember to disconnect the battery before pulling either one of those units.

On the starter you should see the battery cable and a small black yellow wire going to the solenoid, the 10 gauge white wire coming from your engine harness should connect to a fusable link or hard-wired to the starter bolt that the battery cable is attached to.

9 times out of 10, the Previous owner has bypassed it or screwed with it somehow. Just look for a 1/4" thick wire coming out of your engine harness and going to your starter, bolted to the same bolt as the battery cable.
