Arne Posted January 8, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 8, 2011 As far as the original engine, there should be an ID plate on the right front strut housing with the engine # on it.True for 240Z, 260Z and some early 280Zs, but somewhere along the line they stopped putting the engine number on the data plate. Seems to me it was partway through the '76 model year. So your car may or may not have the engine number on the plate. If it does not, all you can go by is whether the number is in the correct range for the car or not.
webdawg1 Posted January 8, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 8, 2011 Looks like the PO (Previous Owner) has made some changes...Hmmm...go figure...here's a picture of the "Vacuum Canister"...might help some with the connection for the rubber lines...and another picture with the connections... should be pretty near what you have as it's for a 75 280Z...webdawg1

Moonshine Posted January 8, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted January 8, 2011 Well, I would say it has a leak in the heater radiator.Headed out to the garage - dash removal/replacement is next - is there a way to check leakage in heater core - pressure test? - plug up one side - fill w/ water - air nozzle other end? Zs-ondabrain Posted January 8, 2011 Share #19 Posted January 8, 2011 (edited) yes, pretty universal.Heater core, likely leaking, look for dried fluid inside the heater core box. Most radiator repair shops can check or repair it for you and you can always look for another one, but don't buy a used one. just saying.Charcoal canister is obviously Not 100% needed but if you want is to all work correctly, then I would likely reinstal one. It's an emmisions part.Bracket under AFM, possibly for A/C pump that no longer exists? Can't really tell from the photo. The black Ground wire on the Alternator rear should be bolted to the alternator. Usually just a simple screw. The white plug with white wire(s) (near the center console) looks like the stereo plug, Datsun used white wires for the rear speaker(s) Almost any black wire in an S30 Z is a ground wire. Green is typically lighting, Blue is typically power of some sort but none of these are definates, only typical of most Datsun wiring. Here's a link to the best info you need on your electrical and everything else, The Factory Shop Manual is here.......http://www.xenons30.com/reference.html Save your FSM to your Computer, you'll likely use it more than once with that Z.Hope this helps a little,Dave Edited January 8, 2011 by Zs-ondabrain
colinc Posted January 8, 2011 Share #20 Posted January 8, 2011 (edited) 1. Heater hose flange on firewall - intake/return - disconnected - only reason i would think this was done is that there is a problem underneath dash - they looped the intake hose from the pump back to the block - any other reason why this benefits or hurts performance ?Agree - leaking heater core. Also, I saw a post about this on Zcar.com. The jist is that looping the heater inlet hose causes an increase in running temperature versus just blocking off the inlet hose (see below). I looped my hose last summer and did not have any issues (it may have run hotter but never overheated)http://www.zcar.com/70-83_tech_discussion_forum/looping_heater_hose_895493.msg2692030.html#msg2692030 Edited January 8, 2011 by colinc
webdawg1 Posted January 8, 2011 Share #21 Posted January 8, 2011 Part number appears to be the same...14950-N4800...see following url for part numbers for the various items listed...item #13 would be the vapor canister...and item #19 for the bracket...item #20 will be the mounting screws (6mm x 1.0 x 20mm) Vapor canister appears to be somewhat universal as I see no "years" listed out to the side...http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsunS30/DatsunFairladyZIndex/Engine280Z/EmissionControlDevice/tabid/1601/Default.aspxwebdawg1
Moonshine Posted January 8, 2011 Author Share #22 Posted January 8, 2011 As far as the original engine, there should be an ID plate on the right front strut housing with the engine # on it. There is a stamped # on the block at the right rear area, betw. the 5 + 6 sparkplug area. Compare the two to see if they match. also agree that there is a heater core leak; that is why the coolant lines are disconnected as they are. Engine Tag reads = L28 100516 - but could not find matching tag on front right strut housing
mgood Posted January 8, 2011 Share #23 Posted January 8, 2011 Moonshine from the picture in post 4 your car was originally 302 green leaf metallic like my car. Look at the hood latch for the original color. The color seems to be rare, any way I have not seen many in pictures or in person. I have a lot of pictures of my car in original condition, if you need me to get some to you let me know.
