Thanks for the tips. Fortunately I do have a good memory, unfortunately it is very short! I'll make sure the spring compressors are secure and that there is no pressure on the nut!

I'm not going to tell you to do anything unsafe, but the springs in a 240Z are not that stiff and not that compressed compared to other struts. There are some out there that have a LOT of stored energy, the Z is not one of those.

He's got a 78 280, and those springs are compressed about 4 inches.

I did it with a vise grip to hold the shaft while I turned the nut - the shock is going in the trash anyway. That was on a 77 280z - spring compressor on. Mine were all originals when done and all were very hard to remove.

Except the OP confirmed that the nut is stripped, not the top mount. The shaft isn't turning according to him.

I do question this a bit though because the shiny strut shafts can be very trick to see spin. The best way to tell is to paint pen a line across the threads and nut and then turn the nut 1/4 turn and see if the marks still line up.

Yes, I have marked the shaft on the flat side of the D, and marked the nut and then turned in 1/4 of a turn. The nut is turning and the shaft is not. Still, I would assume with the pressure from the spring, it would help push the nut up, but it did not. Cutting it off tonight, hopefully. With extreme care of course.

Got it off, had to cut it off. :classic: I've attached a picture and you can see where it was stripped.

Glad you got it apart. Now it's time for new inserts. Make sure the top mount D holes are in good shape too.
