Posted January 13, 201114 yr comment_341856 Has anyone tried rebuilding an ignition switch? My switch is starting to get flakey. I have to wiggle my key sometimes to get my heater fan to work. I was hoping to take mine apart and clean it up if possible. Anybody done this before? January 13, 201114 yr comment_341888 Hows the key staying in switch? If you can remove it while car is on, replace the switch. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38231-flakey-ignition-switch/#findComment-341888 Share on other sites
January 13, 201114 yr comment_341892 Hows the key staying in switch? If you can remove it while car is on, replace the switch.Wrong.The Ignition LOCK actuates the Ignition SWITCH.The Lock is comprised of the Key Cylinder, the housing and the Steering Column Locking Bar. It's ability to hold the key inside the cylinder is not the reason nor the cause of the SWITCH failing. The Switch is attached to the back of the Lock Housing, and is actuated by a metal tab that protrudes through the lock housing from the Key Lock Cylinder. The switch is replaceable, and it is the electrical part of the arrangement (ignoring the Key-In buzzer Switch). If you are having intermittent electrical connections replace the SWITCH.If you are having difficulty with the key staying in the lock, or not turning smoothly, or... replace the Key Cylinder and posibly the Housing. (Depending on the nature of the problem.)E Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38231-flakey-ignition-switch/#findComment-341892 Share on other sites
January 13, 201114 yr Author comment_341904 I'm am definitely having electrical issues with the switch. I need to wiggle it to get the heater fan to come on and sometimes when I wiggle it the car shuts off. I was hoping to rebuild my switch and avoid buying a new one as they are quite spendy. I'll try taking the unit apart this weekend to clean and lube as best I can. Thanks for the feedback guys! January 13, 201114 yr comment_341920 As E wrote, you only need the electrical portion. If you REALLY want to replace the whole thing, the link I gave has about the best price I found. Of course, I just now looked on Amazon. I bought this for my 260Z last year, and the priced has dropped to $61 and is eligible for free shipping.
