Posted January 16, 201114 yr comment_342260 when I removed the black surround to my taillights all of the small plastic rivets broke. these rivets are smaller than the ones that hold the interior plastic in place and I cant seem to find them to order a few...anyone have a link or proper name for them? January 16, 201114 yr comment_342263 I haven't dug that far into my cars. Could they be regular POM rivets? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38267-exterior-taillight-trim-piece-plastic-rivits/#findComment-342263 Share on other sites
January 16, 201114 yr comment_342264 You still might be able to order them. The rivets pictured on top are the for the taillight panel, and the one below are your standard interior rivets. January 16, 201114 yr comment_342271 Looking for some myself. Aren't they grey however? And metal? I remember drilling them out instead of pushing the center in. I think...... I think......The original rear panel rivets are plastic. Most likely, the previous owner removed and replaced the panel and opted to go with aluminum pop rivets. January 16, 201114 yr comment_342280 Went and looked at the other 72. The rivet is plastic, but does not have a push pin in the center. It is built more like a traditional thumb tack. It is grey to match the panel. At least on this car. I remember it being the same on the other car as I couldn't get them to pull out so drilled them out. Not sure how well the ones pictured would work as they would set up higher and might interfer with the hatch. January 16, 201114 yr comment_342289 They work fine. remember, the 240Z used small black plastic rivets with the push in center pin. There is NO clearance issue unless you have NO weather stripping and the hatch sits on metal??alot of PO's tossed the plastic in trade for metal. So a stock rebuild or restoration would use the plastic ones.As far as having plastic rivets with no center pin, you might find that if you use a small punch in the center, that there actually is a pin there. it's just blended with the outer rivet over the years. The 260Z and 280Z's used larger plastic and also screws.Dave Edited January 16, 201114 yr by Zs-ondabrain Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38267-exterior-taillight-trim-piece-plastic-rivits/#findComment-342289 Share on other sites
January 16, 201114 yr comment_342376 Motorsports has them-for $1.00 EACH. I know this is probably not a huge volume seller for them, (6 per car every 25 years) but there has to be a hell of a margin in there. January 17, 201114 yr comment_342450 A buck fifty. Each. Ten bucks doesn't seem like a big deal in the over all picture, but sheesh........... Its not a lot cheaper but you dont have to pay shipping.
