Help on putting choke throttle back together

Yesterday night I took apart my center console in haste n didnt take a pic of the throttle choke assembly before removing it.

May be a long shot but does anyone have a pic of it?

I think I got the pivoting part put back together to the V shaped housing. Think I'm off were the cable latches onto the cylinder screw.

Love to help but there are 3? I think? different choke handle assemblies thru the years. Anytime you ask a question on a specific model or part, please include what it pertains to. Year, model ect. Just trying to help but you gotta help us first.

I just checked in the garage and I can't find my cable. But I recall it being pretty staight forward. 2 small screws hold the cable block to the handle assembly, and mine used a bolt and small nut to hold the cable and plastic "U" shaped piece to the handle. There may have been a space and small washer in there as well.

This isn't likely helping you but if it feels wrong, it likely is. Just fiddle till ya get it right. It'll feel right.

Dave, I have a late 1970 Z.

This is the lower linkage:

Upper pull part where throttle cable attaches to:

There is a left over washer shaped in the form of a tombstone. Cant figure out where it goes:

Any idea?

And if you don't mind Dave, did I install the parking light upgrade harness correct (I believe you supply this for MSA)? I haven't figure out a way to get that large square relay to fit under the steering column, can't bolt the lower cover back on. The instruction says for the relay to be held together with the ground wire and screw closet to the steering wheel, parallel to the steering column but there is no way the relay loop will permit that.

Thanks!!

Do these help? Sorry for the focus problems. After looking at the photos I posted it looks like I used the throttle lever instead of the choke lever. This might cause some confusion. Looking at your photo you have the wire loop on the wrong side. If you start at the longer side of the lever (left side in your photo) The order is choke wire loop, horseshoe shaped washer, brass spacer, bolt.

NO. The relay and ground wire of the PLH bolt to the steering colum. There are 4 bolts holding the steering column to the underside of the dash. Bolt the relay and the ground wire to the bolt on the left side, closest to you. That's why the 2 wires are as long as they are.

Then twist the 6 wires of the "T" connector into a "LOOP" and put the loop between the column and the ignition switch.

As for the Tombstone, it goes on the other end of the plastic "U" shaped piece to keep the cable from coming off the plastic piece.

If you don't have plastic, then the metal plate just goes over the cable part to keep it locked onto the spacer. Without it, the cable will not dissengage the chokes, it'll just stay ther when you push the handle forward.

So it goes.....

Spacer, plastic, cable into the plastic, metal plate (Tombstone) Sound right?

Thought a pre dis-assembly pic might help. I put whiteout on the "tombstone " shaped washer/retainer so you can see it better in this pic. Like Dave says, without it you can't lock down the cables. Dan's pics show it well if you know what your looking for.

thanks everyone for your contribution in answering my question!

that tombstone/horseshoe washer/retain was a crucial piece. i'm glad i got it put back together. i didnt even know i was missing one of the two plastic washers (found it underneath the drivers seat).

the help and information on this forum is invaluable, way better than hybridZ.

I'm still struggling, sorry! I tried every combination there is. I tried to attach the relay to the top screw and to the bottom screw and still cant manage to close the case.

you're referring to the top screws (the pair that faces opposite direction; located in the middle section of this photo) that holds the ignition crank piece to the steering column correct? this seriously needs a photo write-up ;)

  • 1 year later...

This is a nearly 2 year old thread but I was just taking pictures of this area of my car a few weeks ago to assist in figuring out where to place relays for a turn signal relay upgrade and remembered seeing the parking light relay in one of the pictures. Thought I would post where I put the parking light relay on my car.
