Kathy & Rick Posted January 25, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 25, 2011 Found this lurking on CL in Seattle area. Not much info, but wonder what the towing capacity of my 240 is??http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/pts/2176562247.htmlWe've had a trailer hitch on our '70 for nearly 40 years. We haven't usedit lately, but used to pull what I suppose is a 1/2 ton capacity Sears trailer, full of pylons, timing equipment, and other autocross stuff, with no problemwhatever. Consequently I believe it would also pull a small pop-out campingtrailer effortlessly. But the big deal is to keep the "tongue weight" down, byplaying around with where you load the heavy stuff, so that you don't depress the tail of the Z too much. Not very specific, but I hope it helps. All Z Best,...................................Kathy & Rick
Darrel Posted January 25, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 25, 2011 If it's the one I have seen, it bolts to the bumper and the rear valance. As you know the metal on the rear valance isn't much.I have seen one. The guy has a piece of angle iron going from bumper bracket to bracket bolted to the body, then the bumper. Then he has a piece that is bolted to the angle iron and that attaches to the rear crossmember for the diffy. He even towed an mg on a 1 axle trailer for a short distance. geezer Posted January 25, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) ...but wonder what the towing capacity of my 240 is??I know its been done and in many instances, no problems were experienced but I don't think I would risk it. Its just an accident waiting to happen. These cars were not designed to be tow vehicles. They barely have the capacity to carry two adults and their luggage. Sure, lots of guys will jump in and tell you how they did it, cross country in fact, but I think they can just consider themselves lucky. Am I too cautious? Maybe, but I bet the designers, as well as my insurance provider would agree with me. These cars in stock form don't have the pulling power, stopping ability or weight requirement to qualify as tow vehicles. Do I want a combined Z & trailer sharing the road with me? Nope. IdahoKidd Posted January 25, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted January 25, 2011 At first I thought it was a joke, but now I have heard of several folks towing with there Z and someone says there is a movie from the early 70's that has a towing Z in the background. I don't think I'd consider it myself, at least not configured to the bumper and the valence panel.
herbsteiner Posted January 26, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 26, 2011 I'm with Geezer. My tow vehicles are named "GMC."
Darrel Posted January 26, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 26, 2011 The 280z had one that bolted to the bumper brackets and had another bracket going over the top of the gas tank bolting the body.If I were to put a hitch on the 240, it would be like the one I mentioned in the earlier post. The trailer would be just big enough to have a set of tires and misc tools etc for a long trip or even going to salvage yards.I only posted what I have seen, but not really recommended. Racer_Z_ Posted January 26, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 26, 2011 But why would you want to tow anything with your Z? Just go buy or rent an old truck and be done with it. I use my F250 to tow the Z to the track.
Bonzi Lon Posted January 26, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 26, 2011 geezer, I'll be that one that did it, but only a 1/4 the way cross country. The 73 had the hitch on when I bought it, so why not use it. Moving back from college, hooked up the smallest enclosed trailer U-Haul had, about 4ft sq. Balanced the best I could and off on a 750 mile journey. Anything above 55 it got squrirley. Slowest trip that Z ever made. This is what it looks like and mounting points, not the best, but it worked. Photos won't load, will post later. Bonzi Lon
Bonzi Lon Posted January 26, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 26, 2011 Worked now. Bonzi Lon
Marty Rogan Posted January 26, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 26, 2011 I used to pull my tire trailer behind my Z with no problems at all. I hardly knew the trailer was back there when towing. Of course I didn't have a lot of weight on it either, probably around 350 lbs. My Hitch was mounted behind the bumper to the bumper mounting holes in the rear of the car. A strap then wrapped around the gas tank and was bolted onto the rear cross member. It was made of very heavy gauge steal. This provided for a very solid mount to the car.
