buddyjackson Posted January 30, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2011 i thought it was fuel but i just replaced fuel pump and every rubber hose, but the car when i drive it starts acting like its runing out of gas then it shuts off ,but i learned that if i unplug the starter and if ihold the key on start postion it runs fine and when i let the key go to on postion it starts acting up again. its nothing to do with fuel pump relay to test i straight wired fuel pump and it still dose it :tapemouth
FastWoman Posted January 30, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) Buddy, I see you have a '77 -- EFI.I had an intermittent problem with my '78's fuel pump wiring. Maybe yours is the same. There are a couple of large wiring harness connectors just on the cabin side of the passenger-side firewall. They might be covered by a piece of trim plastic. The fuel pump wire runs through the corner of one of those connectors. I believe it's blue with a green trace, but I'm not certain. Anyway, that connector carries a lot of current and can cause arcing and melting in the connector. I tried cleaning up mine a couple of times, but the connection continued to be problematic. I ultimately snipped the wire out of the connector and connected it via a bullet connector. I haven't had problems since.Other than that, just start looking for charred connectors. You'll likely find one. Edited January 30, 2011 by FastWoman
Zed Head Posted January 30, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 30, 2011 It sounds like the fuel pump contact switch in your AFM. I wish I would have thought of disconnecting the starter wire when mine went bad on the road, I had to tap in to my defroster circuit to keep my fuel pump running to get home. SteveJ Posted February 1, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 1, 2011 Keith,Two resources that you should download include the Fuel Injection Bible and the factory service manual. You can find the FI Bible at Blue's tech tips (link below). The FSM is available at XenonS30. Look in the EF section to start. You should also search this site for a color version of the wiring diagram. I think there is one floating around for the 77.If you are patient, you can see what is powered by the key in the run position as opposed to the key being in the start position. FastWoman Posted February 1, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 1, 2011 Buddy, my fuel pump relay would stay on too. The connection to which I refer is between the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump. As far as I'm aware, there are only three connections between the relay and the pump. The first is the plug that goes on the relay, the second is the harness connector inside the firewall, and the third is the post on the fuel pump.
