I Give Up - Dash Comes Out For A/C, Heat, and Fan Upgrades

Well between Houston's summer heat and now our harsh winter I am giving in to do the

  • a/c repairs
  • heat repair
  • upgrade the blower motor (the bearings are starting to squeal anyway)
  • another clock to put in also
  • replace all dash lights with 4 watt bulbs while I'm at it
  • The dash will also get the dash cap while it's out as well.

Question - While I've got the dash out what else do I need to do while I'm under there?

Clean all electrical connectors with Deoxit (or similar contact cleaner). Repair any wiring that is damaged. Inspect the heater core and related hoses/clamps for signs of leakage or deterioration, replace as necessary. Clean and lube all actuating cables associated with the heat/AC system, these are the cables that connect to the levers on the heater control panel.

Yes, the foam seals in your heater box will be shot, but i am sure you have seen that by now. Perfect time to re and re all heater box components. When I took mine apart, the core looked perfect, but there was no way I was putting it back together without having it checked. Sure enough there was a pin hole leak that needed to be soldered. I can't think of anything more disheartening than to get the whole car back together and then to have the heater core leak on the boss's brand new shoes first time out.
