Stopping rust before it starts

Recommended Posts

I just returned from Texas with a complete body for my 240 that had been soda blasted, primed, and has por-15 on the interior. After going over this car from top to bottom the only rust found was a golf ball size hole in the passenger side floor. the insides of the doors and fenders have a glossy black paint that is peeling off. My question is , What can I do to stop rust before it starts on a bare bones body?

You may want to check with whoever soda blasted and primed the car to make sure the blasted metal was cleaned correctly before priming. Sodablasting leaves a residue on the metal that must be chemically removed before application of primer . If the metal was not treated you should strip it and start the priming process over.

I'm currently sandblasting Project 3/72. Immediately after I get it down to the metal I seal it with RUSTOLEUM RUST REFORMER. It dries to a good finish and can be primed right over. Available at WALLY WORLD. I actually let some water sit on a spot on the wiper cowl area over night to see what would happen. No problems the next day. Since you have just a chassis it would probably be a good idea to strip it and start over concentrating on the known rust areas. Good Luck.
