Toasted Clutch?

I finally got a chance to pull the slipping clutch in my 240z and I am quite suprised by what I found. I am not sure why it was slipping. The free play was set fine, there were no problems with shifting at all, and it appears that I have the proper clutch collar. According to Zparts.com it is a type b 5 speed collar with a old release bearing. The clutch friction material matches to the flywheel as well. Just to get everything out there, I am using a new non-adjustable slave and a type b clutch fork.

The previous owner put the clutch in so I am unware of the brand, but appears to have a ton of friction material. The only problem I had with the tranny is 5th gear pops out, but that shouldn't cause slippage in 2-4 at WOT.

Other that the obvious blued metal does anything look wrong with these parts. I have tons of friction material before it gets to the rivets.

With the slave rod removed and the rubber fork boot removed can you see in the with a mirror or something and see that the fork is pulling the T/O bearing off the pressure plate fingers. That would be the place to start.

Around the shop one of Murphy's Laws is "you used the wrong collar". Doesn't matter what was in there before.

The other gottcha if the collar is right, "they gave you the wrong style of T/O bearing". Where's a picture of yours? It should show where the fingers have been touching that raised area around the face of the bearing.

Actually, you can still see the marks from where the flywheel was resurfaced. This would suggest that there was not a lot of a lot of slipping between the disk and the flywheel. Are you saying that the car WAS drivable at some point since you've owned it?

You mentioned "The only problem I had with the tranny is 5th gear pops out" I had the same issue and after awhile I couldn't even select 5th gear. As a matter of fact I drove from Tucson back to Florida with only 4 forward gears. It turns out the synchronizer needed to be replaced. So since you have it apart still assumably it might not be a bad idea to have those replaced. Just a thought.

I bought the car undrivable, but got it moving this summer. All told I maybe put 300 - 400 miles on it between June and Oct. It started out slipping in 3rd and 4th, but it was only at full throttle. Eventually it started to do it in 2nd. It was weird having the engine rev up and then the car catch up to the proper speed. It wasnt a complete slip where only the engine revved and the car didn't move.

I wish I would've thought about looking into the clutch mechanism with a mirror before pulling it apart. Assuming my son cooperates I should be able to get a picture of the thow out bearing and collar posted tonight.

I also think the flywheel looks freshly resurfaced. The clutch only makes contact with that inner area so that would make sense to be cleaned up there. Though I would think that would be more complicated to machine.

I have 3 unknown quality transmissions so I was goin to try those before pulling the transmission apart. Though it is not a bad idea to check the syncros.

If it's a 240z clutch, it needs a 240z collar. The tranny is the same dimension whether 5 speed or 4 speed. It looks like a 240 z clutch.....if it is, use a MSA 21-2121 70-74 collar. Carl posted some measurements for all of the clutch collars on one of my threads about the 240mm clutch. To my knowledge there is no such thing as a type B 5 speed collar. If the collar is correct I agree with Marty as above.

I'm with Marty.

PO had replaced master, original slave.

Mine started to slip out after driving fine for months. 2nd and 3rd when I really jumped on it.

Replaced the slave (had a little trouble bleeding, got it eventually) but after that no more slip.

Your slave might be going.
