Choke does not work

Hey everyone, just ordered and received a rubber shift boot and a choke grommet in order to help with the fumes inside the Z. The shift boot has a hole and I can see the floor, while the choke grommet is missing all together and in its place a piece of duct tape.

Anyway, while I am installing the grommet, I was wondering if there was anything I could to do fix the choke? I pull on the knob and the cables do move like they are supposed to, but nothing happens. Not even when I pull on the linkage manually. I know it is supposed to increase the idle in order to help the car warm up.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? Anything that I can do myself or should I leave this to the pros? Thanks in advance

Have you verified that the fuel nozzles are not stuck? The nozzle should pull down out of the carb body about 1/4" when the choke is applied.

Hey kenz240z, I appreciate the quick reply... however I am a noob and I am not really sure what nozzle you are referring to.. sorry! I'll try to do additional research to see if I can find out about the nozzle.

Perhaps your choke cable is slipping in the clamp which holds the outer cable.

I am in the process of intalling the choke grommet and after removing the air cleaner and the cable, I could get a better look. Both cables were clamped down tightly. After removing the cables I noticed the front choke mechanism seems to need a cleaning because it doesn't really move freely, however the back mechanism doesnt drop the jet nozzle... so i am not sure whats going on there. I think the choke can wait a bit, especially since its getting warmer here in Cali.

I do want to finish putting the shift boot and choke grommet however. I was wondering which way to put the grommet through the cables best? There are these brass looking nuts at the end of the cables (in the picture) that I cant fit through the small holes.

Also I removed the center console and saw that one of the plastic mounts for the choke was broken, which is probably common, So I made a bracket/plate (other pics) to remount the choke right. I used a small copper sheet I had lying around but I am not sure if it is a proper material to use or if I should go to the hardware store and get aluminum/steel? Thanks

Those brass nuts are what I suggested you cut off of the outer housing. Why do I have this uneasy feeling?

Hey Bruce, sorry I must have missed your suggestion. I think after those are removed, installation will be a PoC. I don't understand what is making you feel uneasy? Should I not be trying this myself?
