Mark Wright Posted December 6, 2002 Share #1 Posted December 6, 2002 Alright, lets try this again. I'm trying to find out what block I should use for my engine swap. I have an N-42 block with a P-79 head and an F-54 block with a P-90 head. I would think that newer is better but the F-54 is a turbo with fuel injection and I want to stay with carbs. Suggestions? Please help!:stupid:
sjcurtis Posted December 6, 2002 Share #2 Posted December 6, 2002 Mark, I can see your dilema. If only we could all be faced with the same dilema. The best combination in all cases is f54 and p90 so It may be a turbo. To change back just go a set of flat tops pistons to bump your compression. factory carb, Mikunis, Webers or even Delortos will bring it to life for you. The P90 is a updated/ revamped version of the old E31 head from the older 240z cars, with the added extra of all the modern changes built in. The P90 will still take your z carby manifold and carbs. the F 54 again is the real deal it is the last evolution of the L28 and it can crack the wip.I run an injected L28 in my daily runner, f54/P90 and more. For my 2c I would say forget the carbs, go injected or turbo injected with an L28ET f54/P90.Good luck with your dilemaSteve :classic:
Dreco Posted December 6, 2002 Share #3 Posted December 6, 2002 I didn't think that you could use carbs on a P90. That's why I used an N42 with a P54 block. But I have heard the P90 is the best flowing head though. I've also heard that the P54 block had additional web casting between the cylinder walls. My motor (Rebello Racing built 3.0L)is runnin about 275 hp with 50 mm SU carbs. Run's sweet, power band is set up for the1983 280ZX close gear ratio five speed and 3.9 rear end. It's not a V-8, but It sure sounds like one!!!
Mark Wright Posted December 7, 2002 Author Share #4 Posted December 7, 2002 Thanks for the help guys! As much as I would like to keep the injection and the turbo, I haven't got the computer brain to go with them. I was hoping that I could bolt on an intake from one of my other engines to keep the carbs. Ultimatley, I would like to keep the turbo and the carbs but, I've seen what that would entail and I'm not nearly as mechanically inclines as my dreams would like. I think my plan now is to get some flat-top pistons and send the block and head to the machine shop for a rebuild. I'm not sure if they need it but I think it would be worth the money anyway. Now all I need to find is a triple carb setup instead of these finicky SU's and I'm off....in a hurry! In any case, thanks for the replies and hopefully I can update everyone on how it goes.:classic:
