March 21, 201114 yr Author comment_350126 thanks blue! thats good info! i have a 2 litre of diet cola thats been in there for about a week i turn the tank every couple days. the only thing is i dont actually think its rust i think it may be lead from old leaded fuel or something. cause before i put the soda in there i scraped the edge with a screwdriver and it was clean metal under the crud... do you think those suggestions would still work? March 21, 201114 yr comment_350138 If you can scape it off, the suggestions above with chains or marbles in the tank and turning/shaking may help dislodge it. It just may need some elbow grease. You can experiment with solvents by scraping some of the crystals off then putting in a clear glass. Add some acetone see if they dissolve. If not then try phosphoric or muriatic acid in the glass. March 22, 201114 yr comment_350270 Go with what Blue tells you -if you don't want to shake the tank - get a pick-up truck and a really bad bumpy road - my $0.02drink the coke - as a cleaner - not that great.BUTuse eye protection USE IT - Don't lose it - your eyes.Keep a large pitcher of water near by or water hose running.Rinse off all acids or acetone after using. After the tank is really clean there are products to fill in any pin holes or severe rust damage. You may want to consider a new tank if the other is too badly eaten.I can't say enough about personal protection from the acids.I work in a hospital - it's much cheaper to be prepared than make that trip to the E.R..The few times I do try to work on my cars anymore - I'm so bad at it - I call ahead to see if the Blood Bank has O- in stock. March 23, 201114 yr Author comment_350412 yeah i have saftey glasses for my auto class so ill be sure to wear them when doing it. also the reason im even bothering trying to clean it (other then the fact that im broke) is that its not actually eating away at the metal its more like crud stuck to the metal. it scrapes off and is good clean metal. i just cant get a scraper very far in haha Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38643-gas-tank-cleaning-not-from-z/?&page=2#findComment-350412 Share on other sites
