Posted February 23, 201114 yr comment_347055 Ok, So just a couple of days ago i could turn the key and my car would start right up. Now, when i turn the key all i get is a clicking sound from the passenger side floor board. Could this be the ignition relay? How/What would be the best way to check? What else would cause this problem? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38674-turn-the-key-just-get-a-click/ Share on other sites
February 23, 201114 yr comment_347058 Could be a number of things. Usually if you're getting a clicking, your relay is working. Start with the battery. It could be a number of things: Battery, bad cables, bad connections on the battery terminals, alternator, starter, wiring. Do you have a service manual? February 23, 201114 yr Author comment_347060 I have the downloaded FSM. I know the battery & cables are fine, It started fine until i fixed the two green wires from C-5 and C-6 (had them crossed) after that all i get is the click. February 23, 201114 yr comment_347061 I know the battery & cables are fineHow do you "know" that? Did you perform a load test on the battery? Just because the battery can hold 12.6VDC or more doesn't mean that it can supply the necessary current to crank over a cold engine.Have you put the battery on a charger or tried jump-starting the engine? February 23, 201114 yr comment_347062 Check and double check the ground connection at the battery. I would (and am) betting it is a bad connection at the battery. February 23, 201114 yr Author comment_347070 I did have a loose connection on the ground @ the ignition relay. Thanks for all the advice. Everything is running great, alternator output is ~14.5V now that i fixed the crossed green wires. I've noticed several loose connection throughout the car (constantly having to wiggle wires to get lights and others to come on), Any thoughts on fixing these cause they are old japan style bullet connectors? I've been to one site, but all they offer are the flat style. (The mega hardware/lumber yard)The connectors that they carry will actually plug into the originals and vice versa. I am sure that they are less expensive elsewhere, but how many do you really need? February 26, 201114 yr Author comment_347332 I'm sorry, here is a picture of the connector type that i was refering to. I can find the replacement male & female flat terminal connectors, but can't find the male or female replacement of these. February 27, 201114 yr comment_347561 Alex, you could try cleaning those connectors up with some Caig Deoxit and emory paper. For the female side you might have to glue the emory paper onto a small phillips screwdriver that can fit loosely inside the connector.
