Posted March 9, 201114 yr comment_348699 Our club has an event this Saturday that I don't want to miss. I've been meaning to change out the stock steering wheel for a new Grant wheel, but I have limited time between now and Saturday. I don't want to start the project and not get finished in time for the event. Can anyone give me an idea how long it took them to do this swap? I am pretty handy, but not a mechanic, if that helps. March 9, 201114 yr comment_348704 If you have a puller maybe 10 minutes. If you are doing it by the hand, it could range from 10 minutes to a few hours in the hospital from wacking yourself in the face when you pull it off the steering column. Pull the stock horn, unplug the horn connections, remove the middle nut, use a steering wheel puller or yank by hand. Then reverse Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38839-how-long-to-install-grant-steering-wheel/#findComment-348704 Share on other sites

Head scratching time tends to turn some of these upgrades into "there's X hours of my life that I'll never get back". March 10, 201114 yr comment_348743 I was able to wiggle my steering wheel off in no time. If you don't wan't wack yourself and have a stubborn wheel you can always rent a puller from Autozone. March 10, 201114 yr comment_348744 I WHACKED myself in the face pulling the steering wheel off of a 1981 280ZX. To answer your question about 15 minutes. March 10, 201114 yr Author comment_348794 Thanks for the advice. I have a puller, so face whacking is out. That said, if there is another way to injure something during the process, I'll probably find it.:stupid: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38839-how-long-to-install-grant-steering-wheel/#findComment-348794 Share on other sites
March 11, 201114 yr comment_348851 About 10 minutes. You just need to wiggle your steering wheel back and forth and pull. +1 on having the nut on to catch the wheel before it imprints on your face. You will need to bend the "wiper" (that copper thingum that connects the wheel to the steering column and activates the horn) fairly substantially. Unplug your horns so you won't get the neighbors all upset. Cheers, Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38839-how-long-to-install-grant-steering-wheel/#findComment-348851 Share on other sites
March 11, 201114 yr comment_348853 Oh, and one more thing. You may have to adjust the pins that activate the turn signal return. I did. Had to make them stick out more to activate the turn signal return.Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/38839-how-long-to-install-grant-steering-wheel/#findComment-348853 Share on other sites
