240Z Turn Signal Issue

Hi,

I have a 72 240Z that I recently acquired. The turn signals worked at the time. The hazards worked as well. The hazards still work but the turn signal, neither left nor right, works. All of the fuses are fine. What needs to be fixed? Thanks.

Have you checked the bulbs, flasher, and to see if power is getting to the sockets via the turn signal switch?

How do you know that the fuses are "fine" ?

Turn signal switch contacts can get dirty but usually exhibit one side not functioning.

But cleaning the contacts wouldn't hurt if done correctly.

Time to grab the FSM / wiring diagram and a DVOM and do some tracing of power.

Thanks for the advice. The turn signals worked fine, until they stopped working. Neither side signals. However, the hazard lights flash on and off quite well. All of the fuses were looked at and since the hazard lights work, leads me to believe it is not a fuse.

Does the system have a flasher unit that could have gone bad? And if so, where is it located? Or is this likely a relay issue?

Could have a flasher issue or a switch problem. The turns and hazards use separate flashers.

Hazard and signals run on different circuits. Double check ALL fuses. I recently had a similar problem and it didnt help that the brand new, fresh from the pkg, fuse was bad from the get go. Wasted a lot of time working my ways back to the fuse, swapped it out, again, and whammo! Turn signals and back up lights.

I have exactly the same problem. And guess where it first came up? AT THE INSPECTION OFFICE! I dont know what causes it but switching hazards on-off, on-off usually solves the problem for me.

My bet is on the hazard switch as the problem. The turn signals and hazard both are ran through the hazard switch, at least on the early models. The switch can be rebuilt sometimes . Mine has a splint glued in it on the switch lever and has held for about 5 years so far.

The Hazards were not built as a precise Unit. The damn contacts get out of alignment and the turn siganl wires go thru the Hazard switch. Here in lies the problem.

The case is made of a Pot metal that easily breaks if you try to bent the tabs to get into it and clean the contacts.

So if you're careful, and don't mind using an epoxy on it if you break a tab or 2 (bend as few as possible) then rebuild it.

Use Acetone to clean the old grease off where the slide slips along the contact, use a dremel with mini wire wheel to clean all the contact points, regrease with a trace amount of dielectric grease where the slides slide and put it back together.

Dave is right about the case of the hazard switch. I had to glue mine back together as the tabs broke off.

I have had the same problem, Checked all the fuses, bulbs, cleaned the turn signal switch, checked power throughout. Was not getting power to the turn signal switch. Recently I put a full dash cap on. Found that the dash cap was not letting the flasher switch shut off all the way. trimmed it out a little so it would. Now the turn signals are working brighter then ever. Thanks for the info above.
