Gas Mileage

Have any of ya'll seen this garbage about the fuel mileage having to be raised for light trucks?

I'm all about helping the enviroment and all, but it pisses me off that all these morons just "having" to drive SUV's (Stupid Urban Vehicles) have now caused us people who drive "real" trucks to look bad. Some clowns at CAFE say that automobile manufactures have the mechanicals to increase mileage by 34.5 mpg!!! Fooey I say. Show me a 50 mpg motor that makes no less than 180hp and 200lbft of torque and then i'll say okay.

Maybe they should just cease or incredibly reduce the # of the bricks on wheels (SUV's) sold and their mileage would be back on track. Soccer mom doesn't need to be driving a damn Excursion with a V-10 to begin with.

Sorry, had to vent. How does everyone else feel? Both sides please.

1/2 ton pickups are used for work and play.

I would like too see you haul your kids around in the z, but i do think the minivans are better for soccer moms, and also, what if teh SUZ drivers said "Take away there power, Cars that can do more than the speed limit shouldnt be on the road", i mean, you gotta look at it from both sides man.

Also do you realize that these "Real" trucks, also have some of the worst gas mileage on earth, im a die hard chevy fan, but ill admit that The chevy 1500 gets 12.5MPG and is in the top3 for worst gas mileage, and i dont think there was more than 1 SUZ on that list, but there were several "Real Trucks".

Correction...I never said real.

Soccer mom needs a mini-van. Yes. Expedition/Excursion. No.

Mini-vans get better mileage than full-size sport utes. Half-ton Pickups are classified as as light-duty trucks and are required to meet all epa standards. 1 ton trucks are much more lacks in these catagories. Why should Joe Blow have to buy a 1 ton that doesn't meet all the EPA standards just because he need s a truck to haul his paint supplies for work and something to tow his racecar on the weekend.

If the 1/2 tons are grouped in this category their perfomance will suffer. Check out the smaller trucks that can do the job just fine but will be effected by such a law such as the Frontier from our beloved Nissan... tows 5000 lbs and gets 19 mpg.

Also...why else do you think the focus from the car companies has been the "cute utes" lately. The escape, tracker, highlander, you get the point. They get better mpg just by size alone. America has been on the bigger is better mentality for too long. Slow the production on the full size SUV's. This will drive the price up. Then people will be more likely to buy Sedans and mini-vans and The mpg numbers will come back in line.

In 2000, for the first time in history, light truck sales beat car sales. Too many people are buying SUV's. That's the end all be all of it.

on another note... whats slp stand for? Street legal performance?

This would explain the chevy comment.

Yes it is Street legal performance, as in lingenfelters GM branch, but i hope im not sounding like a arse, but SUV's are great for some things, but vans are great for others, its wierd, and i dont think it will change, most muscle cars get the same gas mileage as suvs, but who cares, its not gonna change, so we gotta live with it i guess.

  • 2 years later...

bringin ol thread back sorry, but IMO prices will be around 3 in next summer, and yes I hate SUV, and not because of the type of the is whyu people buy them. the y buy them to look more powerfull among other, to feel control, 98% of hte poeple that have 4x4 dont use, so most SUV would do better in a minivan, its jsut stereype, that mini vans are for women, and a few bunch does buy SUV for offroading or snow, but having excursion and expedition, make an accident far worse for a light car like the 240z. IMO

Luckily I have the option of public transit now and can ride free with my university ID. Austin has a bus system whereas in Arlington they had none. FYI, Arlington, TX is the largest city in the united states with no mass transit system. Every time it comes up in city council it gets lobbied against heavily by General Motors, who operate an automobile manufacturing plant in Arlington. Pretty crooked if you ask me. I was burning through about 20 gallons every week or two from needing to drive everyplace. Luckily I only go through about 13 gallons every month or two now.

Boy, I find it sad that here in the US we have people suggesting that the government step in and tell us what we can and can't drive. If you want the government to force a cut in production of SUVs due to their gas consumption, how soon is it that they force other cars off the road based on emmissions? And what cars have the worst emmissions? SUVs, trucks, nope, the old classics. We are already battling the movement to get the old cars off the roads. I agree that a lot of peple drive vehicles only for status reasons...but hey who are we to say thats wrong. We drive Z's and they are not the most practical, efficient, or safest.

both points make sense. if you want the government to tell suv's to stay off the road then you can't expect them to leave our z's on the road. if the man is going to make manufacturers make light trucks with 35mpg more efficiency then they should probably make sport utes do something along the same lines though. while the small trucks may get crappy mpg for size of motor and size of vehicle i'm sure the amount of gas suv's suck up is just as bad and should be adjusted if they're going to pick on small trucks. i heard a stat saying that in the next 20-30 years the water level is supposed to rise 9-12 feet which puts a good chunk of florida underwater. it would probably be nice if people just tried to make a conscious effort to opt for hybrids when available or something a lil more environmentally friendly than an excursion. i'm sure the rise in gas prices coming up will push people that way anyways though.

the 240z may not be safe, but is it SUVsthat make cars like miata a mess, for what cause?is like thinking "as long as i am safe in my SUV, donsent matter people in other cars", I am not enforcing the gov, but I would relly prefered the 90s with a lot of real sport cars, rx7, 300zx tt, supra, and SUV with off road tires made for off roading, not lincoln's with street tires and 22 inch that dont even have 4x4, that are making other small cars, less safe to crash with. and raising gas prices. classic cars like 240z are a real minority, if we were a problem they the gov would probably lower the emission's year
