hey i bought my first 1972 240z. little things here and there need fixing and heres one of them. my shifter is extremely wiggly! i just took the center console out to see whats going on and it seems theres a lot of space on both sides of the shifter. is there anything that shoulda been there, or can i just cram it with spacers?

Yes. Some people use brass bushings from the hardware store. Use "shifter bushing" as a search term and you'll get several good threads.

It's a common problem, the plastic ones crack and fall apart after many years.

If you choose to use the OEM bushings, you'll need 2 ea. 32855-H1010, one for each side, and 1 32861-N4200 which goes on the bottom of the shifter. You can use brass if you wish as they will basically last forever but they have a tendency to vibrate and the nylon ones are cheap and they really don't wear that quickly.

So I've looked on Ebay and found the brass shifter bushings. (Mine are shot too.) However, it's only the side ones I see. Does the bottom one tend to go out too? Maybe it's easy to make one?

In my experience, the OEM bushings only hold up for several years of regular use. I've worn out a few sets. Of course that was mostly when I was younger and... er... lived up to my "FastWoman" moniker a bit better.

I went through the hassle of buying and milling some brass bushings. Then I found out that they are sold on ebay for around $13.00. I would definitely go with brass over stock plastic.

Just looked at my records, I got mine (bronz) on ebay from zsource, buy it now $8.00 + $3.95 shipping. EXCELENT fit and finish, shifter feels like new.

I only changed them once in each of the cars I had that were set uptht way. If the ones I change out were in there from 'day one' then I'd say they last long enough. It seem to me that the side ones wear out while the bottom ones crack if anything goes wrong with it. The ball/pivot style of the bottom one would make it hard to make at home.

chrysler door hinge bushings, help me part number 38377 comes with 2 bushings or there is another help me part that has a selection of bushings 2 sets of which will work. It won't cost you more than $6 at most.

Blue has instructions on his site. You will only have to file on the flats to fit the shifter between the ears. Use lube when fitting the bushings, and use the shifter pin to form the bushings to the pin using a vice.

** These should work as they are the same dimensions as the 2nd set of bushings that are in the 38374 package. And they come in a package of 15.
