Will a 5 speed pay for itself?

If your car has a newer 4 speed it might also have a different differential. You might check your rear gear ratio before you go, just so you know what you're working with.

Plus, if you are still stock, that 3.36 ratio will be in an R180. The ZXz will probably be R200s if they are manual, which will be more work to swap in.

And the 78 Z 5 speed most likely has the same first four gear ratios as your Type B 4 speed. Using it would give you the same ratios you have now, plus one more.

There's a variety of combinations to choose from.

When you are at the yard, look for an '83 to '85 Nissan 4X4 truck. The front diffy will be a R180 with 3.9 or 4.11 gears. Some of the 200SX cars had R180 3.90 and 4.11 gears, too. If you want to use an R200 you will need a mustache bar out of a 280Z to do the swap.

This link has some info on the Datsun/Nissan diffys:

I'll look. Thanks for tips. Have a bead on a 2.6 with 78 5 speed and 3 screw tops running and recently rebuilt for 450. Pulled for v6 t5 swap 3 years ago. Guy is clearing garage. Seems too good to be true. But worth risk I think.
